Just moved to a county in TN that requires emissions test before tags can be renewed. I have gutted my cat. Is there anything I can do to pass the test without buying another one? A previous post recommended Iso Heet. Will this help me? I know there is a visual and sniffer test. Thanks for any help.

****If it's just a sniffer test, you *might* be able to pass if everything is in good tune, you have a functioning EGR valve, and the car is well warmed up. Just try it out, you usually get a free re-test, anyway.

If it's a dyno test like we have here in Maryland, you will need a functioning Cat Convertor, and no amount of Iso-Heet or whatever is going to help you. Get the Cat..

get the cat...it only take me about 15 mins to change out the test/dump pipe and put in the cat.

Tennesee has idle test only, measures hc and co. You don't know what a real emissions test is. :D Your car should pass with or without a cat, so long as it idles in closed loop.

I think I have been worrying too much over nothing. I did get some "Guaranteed to Pass" at the auto parts store. Ran it out going to Bowling Green for the Nationals today. Getting a fresh tank of gas and going for the test Monday or Tuesday.

How would I know if idle is in closed loop? (I did buy a Scanmaster today and am going to install it Saturday. Will it tell me?)

Thanks to all who have replied.

Read the instructions for sure.

I believe if the light for the decimal place is on solid and not blinking it's in closed loop.

Blinking is open loop.

Or it's the other way around.

:p

Should be in the paperwork supplied.

One blink every second is open loop and one blink every 2 1/2 seconds is closed loop

Tested Today

Emssions tested today
Sniffer test at idle, then rev to 2500 rpm for 10 seconds, and then another idle test for 10 seconds.

CO .63 Limit 1.20 PASSED
HC 429 Limit 220 FAILED
CO2 9.89

80 degrees today
Engine temp at approx. 200 degrees
Idle at approx 800 rpm

Have a Cat on order. Will anything else cause high hydrocarbon reading? Injectors are 2 years old. Just changed out all vacuum lines. MAF and O2 sensor are 2 years old.

Possible misfire or leaking fuel, HC is too high and CO2 is too low. Even without a cat, CO2 should be in the 13% range. CO2 is a product of perfect combustion and the higher the number, the more efficient the engine runs. This is to a certain extent, get CO2 beyond 16% and emissions goes through the roof to the other extreme.
