Coil readings are in normal range at rest...those readings were in K ohm, right?
Under load the coil pack might behave differently either due to being bad or being pulled down by something else, so if you hve a known good one you could borrow, it couldn't hurt to swap it and see. Takes about 30 minutes....

How about your plug wires. Are they fresh and in spec for the resistance per foot that are rated to?

Still would like to know what heat range plugs you installed...hopefully R43's or an equivelent.

Is your alternator putting out enough juice under load?

I dont have a known good coilpack I could try, and was about to pick one up at autozone before I started reading about them. After that, I ordered one from kirban. Also got a set of wires as well.

Yes the readings were in K ohm. My plugs are AC delco R44s gapped to 32. Can this cause a problem?

The R44's might be the other part of your problem. They're good for stock boost levels. If you're at 20lbs, you need to put some R43's in there and don't gap them any wider than 0.030

For 20 PSI the 44's are fine. As is the .032. If the electrical system on the car is healthy. And there isnt any underlying issue like bad MAF, coilpack, CHIP, etc..

Times in my sig where at .032 fwiw. But every car is different.

Cheers

I will swap coils/wires as soon as mine come in from kirban and see how the car reacts. It looks like a load issue since it is now only backfiring on a downshift, so I am hoping the coil/wires will resolve the issue. The car is pushing closer to 23psi so the plugs will be next on my list if the car is still not running right.

Backfiring at high boost can lift the head.. then you'll be doing headgaskets.

Hi, Razor.
I only bring up the R43's as a preferred for this boost range based on the recommendations at Turbo Regal Web Site

Also...I had a similar backfiring issue a few months back and changing from R44's to R43's fixed it...The R44's I pulled out looked normal and only had about 4000 miles on them.

Like you said, every car is different and there are plenty of other more complex possible causes, but a set of the right plugs are cheap and easy to take care of...and he already got some improvement by swapping in a fresh set of R44's.

I obviously dont drive the car as-is, but after I make a change I have to go for a test drive to see if it resolved the problem. If it did not, and it still backfires, there is not much I can do. Can only hope I can find the root cause before any real damage is done.
