Harmonic Balancer

Can a bad Harmonic balancer cause SERP belt to be eaten up?

My 3800 series 2 3.8 V6 got a new serp belt one week later the belt was shredding on the outside.

Brought it back to the shop & they said HARMONIC BALANCER is bad.

The Shop could not get the harmonic balancer off
they gave me another new belt & sent me packing.

I am wondering how they really know the balancer is bad?

Any GM tech GURU's? any ideas?

look at all the pullys and see if they are chewed and look at the alignment of all the pullys.

Between about 87-91 they did have some problems with the balancers coming apart, form what I recall though it was more of a vibration issue than a belt chewing one. THere is a "new and improved" version out there.

Mine is a 1996 model.. the alignment looks fine & this second belt seems to be ok.

Maybe the first one they goofed up on. It took about 2 weeks to ruin the other one so if this one lasts more than that I would guess it was their mess up the first time or simply a bad belt.
