I knew a guy whose father had dug one in the garage in the 1950's. But here in New Jersey they are illegal. I know a lot of older alignment shops had them, but those are becoming fewer and fewer now.

Nothing a small load of fill and 4" of concrete would'nt fix in a few hours if need be.Or you could fill it to the top with kitty litter and just pretend it's just a spill from your old Buick.:D

I helped my neighbor dig one in the single garage he added on during a remodel. Not too deep, maybe 30 inches or so. But he can get around to change oil and mufflers if he wants.

He dug the hole. Outlined the walls with cement blocks. Poured the floor in cement. His garage floor too. He puts boards over the top like they did in the old days.

I'm planning to have a garage with a high ceiling someday and get one of those lifts for <$3,000. I'm too old to crawl under there ;)

I don't think that pits are legal any more. At least that is what I heard.
With lifts being so cheap nowadays, I think most people would prefer one anyways. Of course, this only works if you have the room for a lift though. I did the same as Lee said he wants. I built a 3 stall with high walls and cathedral ceilings. You have enough room to lift just about anything in there. Now if only there was enough money left for the lift. :(

Why not a PIT in the YARD?
Just dig it out, lay a tarp & work on car.
That would leave the garage alone in case you ever sell the home.

Reminds me of MY 1st car a 65 GOAT.. IT was so high on all four corners that I could creep clear under the car. It was like a 4 x4 :D

Actually I have seen these metal ramps that you drive on & they raise the car like 2 feet. You could roll around under this. I have seen them selling with the lifts in Hemmings or any car magazine adds.

Yes, that's way to go. If you sell the house... no value lost.... if you need to bury a dead body... saves the time in digging. Just toss and fill!:D

Pits are illegal ( I beleive in all 50 states) because gasses and fumes seek the lowest point. It can be very dangerous.

So, I probably should stop inviting gearheads over to drink beer and use the 6 foot deep (16 feet long) pit I have in my shop? If I ever sell I'll just call it a "root celler" and put a sack or two of potatoes in it.:D

theres a guy near here that had a STEAP drop off behind his house, he cemented 2 halfs of a phone poll in to the ground (he stole the poll from a local park):p and layed 2 metal ramps from his drive way to the polls, hes got enugh room under there that he can walk from one end of the car to the other and not even get grease in his hair.

pits are dangerious, there was a old mechanic who was known for running a ford with a olds motor back in the 50s around here named ronnie wood (his son destroyed my 2nd cutlass engine and sold me 4 more junk ones), he got burnt up in one of them pits.
