Hawaii Trip

I live in Atlanta. Taking a trip to Hawaii. I went to Kauai about 10 years ago and loved it, but should I go back to Kauai or should I try Maui? I heard Maui was very commercialized. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Maui is definitely more commercialized, but it still has some character. The sunrise at Haleakala is breathtaking, and Hana (with the drive) is "quaint". Lahaina is a big tourist trap though, like a mini-Waikiki.

Personally, I prefer Kauai, followed closely by the Big Island.

The Big Island is cool too. My wife and I really enjoyed Kona. That was the second time we've been there.

The guys on Oahu are okay too

Well Kauai is nice, rains alot though
Maui is good to, lots more shopping areas to see
Big Island has alot more, you have Kona and Hilo to check out as well, but theres Oahu where the race track is

I think it depends on what you are looking for. I really enjoyed Kauai it was very uncrowded. If you want a chance to walk on a deserted beach Kauai my be for you. With that said I enjoy Maui more and have visited there 4 sperate times and stay in the Kaanapali Beach area. While it is more comercialized (resturants and shopping) there are plenty of places still in their natural state. I would suggest you look at 2 specific travel books - Maui Revealed and Kauai Revealed and make your choice. They are both excellent books.

I was born and raised in Maui. Lahaina is my hometown. Yes, It has changed from a small simple town to a more commercialized place. My childhood home is now a parking lot. Still a lot to do like (71RSZ28) said. Maui County consits of the Island of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. Lanai would make a nice day trip. Molokini is an atol (the rim of a volcano just above the water line) Its an excelent snorkleing adventure, fish will eat right out of your hand. If golf is your game, there are some world class courses with awesome views. Try a helecopter tour, well worth the money. I could go on and on. Let me know if you have any more questions. I say go to Oahu and meet all of the Hawaii Turbo Buick folks! My wife and I went last March and went out to the track there that Friday, which was the day we arrived so she was dead tired, but I had a great time and met about a dozen of the Hawaii TR folks that were out there. In fact, it was the highlight of our whole trip cause it rained for the next 5 days straight that we were there.
One day we did fly over to Maui, but it was raining even more there, we drove up half way to Hana, very scenic, and with all of the rain, all of the waterfalls were rushing very hard, but it looked like chocolate milk
