Is there any difference in picture quality between the 2? I have a Panasonic Plasma with Comcast HD. I'm currently using Component video cables. Will my picture quality be any better if I go with the HDMI cable??
Thanks for any input

HDMI!All digital connection.
There are 3 versions.
Most products have Version 1.1
Newer products past 6-8 mon. 1.2
Version 1.3,the only product that is out right now that has this is PS3.
Vesion 1.3 can carry deep color plus newer audio codecs such as Dolby True Hd and DTS-HD.

I have never seen a difference in quaility until 1080p is used. Then HDMI is required. In my opinion, save your money unless you have a TV that has 1080p.

I do custom home theater installation for a living (8+ years) and have done hundreds of systems. I use HDMI whenever possible, but I feel it's not neccesary unless 1080p is used. I have had problems before when using hdmi's and running all the components into an avr. Some components will not allow hdmi to pass through a piece of component such as an audio/video reciever before it goes to the monitor. Usually it's a copyright protection firmware issue.

I believe 1.3 is for 1080p, Blu Ray, HD DVD, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

.

I have a 61 inch Panasonic LCD Projection TV.
The PS3 set up for HDMI on the Video and Optical on the Audio.
So far the Blue Ray play back has been excellent at 1080I.
Then again the HD DVD play back through the X360 is not bad at all.
If you can do it, if not don't lose any sleep.
I am excited to see some UFC in HD later this year~!!!

I don't really notice a difference btw them on 720p or 1080I. I use one too for my upconvert DVD player. As said you'll need it for 1080p. I can't wait to see 1080p on my SXRD.

1080P will look fantastic on your SXRD.

I was wondering how many of you guys are into hi-fi audio and what kind of gear you have?

My set up:
Rotel-1066 Surround Sound Processor
Rotel-1075 Five Channel Amp
Rotel-1060 DVD Video/Audio Player
Linn Speakers
Martin-Logan Depth Sub
Runco LCD

I have last year's SXRD (the one with the ears). Too bad it doesn't accept 1080P, it just upconverts to that. I still run the HDMI cable, looks great.

That's some nice equipment!

I don't have anything exotic at my house, but it works.

Boston towers, 2 Boston subs, Boston center and Boston micro's in the rear (5.2).
Yamaha AVR (older model from a 3 years ago, cann't remember the pn)
LG DVD (upconverts to 1080i)
Toshiba DLP
Direct TV HD
Sonos digital music system <---I love that!!

Theoretically, yes. Practically, not necessarily. It may be worse. Are you balking at the cost of an HDMI cable? You could always try a friend's (quality) HDMI cable and see/hear for yourself.

My system:

60" SXRD
Yahama RX-V2600
Def Tech's Best Center and Bi-Polar Supertowers
Etc.

I currently have a 65" Mitsubishi projection (1080i) and went to look at new sets tonight at Best Buy. The MAJORITY of the plasma/lcd units are 720p. The HIGH END plasma/lcd are the only ones available in 1080p and for a 52" screen range from $7500-$10,000 and there are only a couple choices. I compared a 720p,1080i, and 1080p side by side and to be quite honest I couldnt really tell a difference in picture quality between any of them nor were they any better than what I already have. How much better can they get? I am hesitant to pull the trigger on a big $$$$$$ TV because it will probably be 1/2 price in 6 mos!

Bill,

Wait there were a couple new technologies at CES that will be worth waiting for. The 1080P is not worth buying a brand new set if your 1080I tv is still good.
I am not a professional but that is my opinion.

Bill, I'd suggest you check out the 1080p Samsung 61" TV, or my fav the 60" Sony SXRD 1080P. Those are in the 2500 range locally and are nice TVs.

i have as follows: Pansonic 37" plasma (1080 i)PS3 blue-ray, Panasonic up-convert dvd player, and one 8" polk self powered sub. i use COX communications for my service: a HD DVR combo settop box. i only have 2 hdmi inputs on the tv. i use the dvd player and settop box with hdmi and the PS3 gets the componet cables.
