do a set of poston headers require a poston up pipe? also, does the passenger side header collecter stick out farther past the motor than stock? thanks,
mike

I have an 85 GN which is completely stock except for a larger cam shaft, cold air kit, and a chip. I called Poston a month and a half ago to inquire about an intercooler. They suggested as a cheaper alternative a set of their exhaust headers, cat converter, and Hooker high flow exhaust system. I took them on their idea.

My mechanic installed this set up along with the copper gaskets last month. Everything fit perfectly with the original crossover, up and down pipes. I will send pictures of the setup if you are interested. I will say that the performance with this new setup is very significant. The car really moves now with no back pressure. The engine really wants more fuel and boost. This will have to wait until my engine warranty expires in two years. The finishing touches then will be the TA33 turbo, adj fuel reg., 36 pound injectors, and a walbro fuel pump(I have the hot wire kit).

I recommend the change if you want to spend the money. These headers are not cheap. Good luck- Brad

yeah, the reason i asked is because i put on the passenger side header and there is absolutely no way it will attach to the turbo with the stock up pipe, for one because the up pipe has a two bolt flange and the header collector has a three bolt, and also because the new header collertor is way out of position. i guess i will have to save up and buy the matching poston up pipe. I wonder if i got the wrong header, or is this normal?

yeah, that's what i was afraid of too, although it wouldn't surprise me, as poston has screwed up three of my past orders in the last year. anyone have pics of what the 85 poston passenger side header is supposed to look like?

@#$%^%$#

Make sure they pay all the shipping expense you are out. I would bet that if you don/t bring it up, they won/t. I have spent all winter straightening other peoples @##$$#@-- up/s. I make enough of my own!!! Just once, I would like to see a vendor step up to the plate and make their mistakes right. It seems that if they make 1000 parts and have only 1 faulty one, that is a good percentage. I alway get that 1!!! Have a nice day.

ok guys check this out just recently i found a leak in my ride and its coming from where the up pipe and the turbo hook up when i accelerate i feel hot air shoot out from there the gasket there might be bad im assuming so do they sell a gasket for that particular place or can i go down to autozone and get a gasket there for that? what do i do as far as that ? ok another thing is im wondering if maybe thats y maybe when i gun it off the line petal to the metal once it reaches full full boost and i have my foot all the way in it knocks it sounds like rocks in my exhaust lol? could that be the problem ?

The Poston pass. side header looks identical to the stocker. shape wise . It just made better and out of a better material.

I run the 85 headers, and use the stocker up pipe and it bolts up perfect.
ITts possible that they made a mistake

Pull out yer stocker manifold, and compare it to the header,

the Header should be routed the same way that the stocker manifold.

YOu can get the Triangular Copper gasket from ATR i believe.

Chances are its leaking in between the pipe and the stock triangular Exhaust donut.

This job is a pain in the put to fix, but your gunna have to unloosen both sides. take the pipe off, maybe sand it down so its smoothe on both flanges.

You could put some ATv heat sealant on both ends and put it back on.
Make sure you tighten both side slowly and evenly.
make sure that you dont tighten 1 side completely and then the other side.
get 1 side started evenly and then start on the other side, and go back and forth.

if you have a leak in your exhaust by turbo, i think it would only affect how fast the turbo spools.

any kind of knock sound isnt good, and if you dont have guages or scan tools. you could be doing some major damage to the car

i believe that rock sound is probally your pistons getting reading to crack :D

make sure your car is in tune and you have ways to monitor it, otherwise your gunna be in bad shape !@

well i dont know where the knock is coming from ill have to find out but i need to know where do i get this gasket from the up pipe and turbo meet?

Hey BuickPower,
The funniest thing happened to me just 4 years ago. I order a set of 1984 POSTONS header for the HOT AIR car, and guess what? I got 1987 POSTON Headers for INTERCOOLED GN. Needless to say, after all those talks about prices, shipping and all BEFORE i ordered the pipes, I was quite preturbed.

When all was said and done, they had no problem refunding me the shipping charges for the second time around, and I used a credit card, so that make things especially easy. I got the correct pipes in less that two weeks, and they were bolted on in a day. The biggest problem I had was the factory studs. What ever you do, replace the botls or studs. It will make your life so much less complicated. Good luck!

John

John, thanks, yeah they weren't any trouble about it and they are gonna pay shipping. In fact they are shipping one out to me today, and when it comes they said to take it out of the box, and put the 87 header right in, and they will have the ups guy give me a sticker to put on the box right there, which is a neat way to do it.

I'll put those studs on, I have heard they make things alot easier. Do you just put them on the header collector part where the crossover bolts to it?

Thanks a bunch,
Mike

I think my car had ATR headers on it when I got the car, but they had that heat wrap on them, and underneath the wrap, there were three cracks. When I tried locating a replacement set, a few people told me they looked like ATR, but nobody was sure. I looked at the atr setup and they were close, but I dont think they were identical. anyway, there was a stud that came out on the passengerside top all the way on the front of the head, right against the collector. It was hell getting any type of wrench on it...I ended up using a brake wrench, and then a boxed wrench just to loosen the thing up, since there was no way in hell to get a socket on it. So, long story short, keep any studs towards the middle or back...if you have just a bolt, then put that at the collector.
Good luck!

John
