I believe very very mild steel. Definitely not stainless!

well.... its fairly decent for what it is if you think about it.

these headers probably have a bazillion heat cycles to them already... that alone causes the metal to slowly crystalize as time goes on. Thats why they crack and become so hard to repair.

when you weld a cracked set up... it holds for a bit, but then later cracks again... right next to the last repair weld. this is that crystalization at work, when you weld it, you finish crystalizing the area all around the repair section.... thus is cracks right next to the repair.

ever repaired a band saw blade too many times and it keeps popping when you try to set the blade back up? same thing.
