Do any parts stores, like Advanvced, Carquest, or Autozone carry "good" headgaskets for our cars?

YES, I already blew a headgasket on my "temporary" motor :o . Dumb '87 MAF sensor was reading 200 when it was probably 250+ while I was switching lanes to get off the highway, and POP!, white smoke. Money has been tight, but I should have just ordered the MAF translator last week and switched.

If I dont have to send out for gaskets I can get this thing back going in no time. Are the local places just going to offer NA 3.8 gaskets?

thanks!

Hey, anyone ever reuse GM steelshim headgaskets? Using ge1200? (Im not talking about blown gaskets of course, referring to the ones off my other engine with few miles on them).

run down to any local gm dealer and get some steel shims

I get em holesale about $10 a piece

The Felpros that AutoZone sells are the 8723PT-1. They are the same that the NA 3.8 call for. How much boost has anyone successfully been able to tune in with these gaskets with out popping them? Im a little leary of using NA gaskets on a turbo motor. GM didnt even use the same gaskets for the two applications, so why would the aftermarket version be the same? Either they are overkill for the NA motor, or they are substandard for the turbo motor.

Also, Reds, I may have asked you this before but did you use ge1200 with the steelshim gaskets or install them dry?
I disassembled my motor yesterday that had the bearing problems. The GM steelshims on there, which I had installed with ge1200 look great, not crushed up or anything. Call me crazy, but the thought crossed my mind of reusing them on this engine with some more ge1200, and knocking the job off today.

Part #: 25524599
List price was $14.61, and net price (from Lou Fusz Pontiac-Buick-GMC in St.Louis) was $11.69 each (wholesale price).

I actually had the 8723's on my first motor...I didn't build that one...That motor actually had 30k miles on it when I pulled it and the gasket actually didn't "pop", it burned through the fire ring between cyls 1 and 3...I had maybe 50 passes at the track at near 20# boost and a few that were more  and obviously the 30k miles of 15-16# boost blasting to and from work every day...But I will definately not use those gaskets on a turbo motor ever again...
