Going to start shopping for a helment that meets the NHRA specs and will appreciate any helpful information as to where to buy and what the specs should be.

Is there a difference between a helment for car use as opposed to motorcycle use??

TIA
HOW

NHRA specs are now snell rating 95 and up. There is a difference in the 2, I'm not sure, I think a bike helmet is lower rated. Try a local speed shop so you can try on a helmet. Make sure it fits snug, you dont want it to move around at all.

There isn't a differance in the ratings. They're all rated the same. I've been using my 6-7yr old offroad helmet for the past year with no problems. Like jehenke said, just make sure it has the right ratings.

There is. Snell ratings have fireproof Nomex liners. Bike helmets do not.

Snell SM rating is for motorcycles, SA is for automotive and has flame retardent in the lining. NHRA requires the SA rating but I'm sure some tracks don't check as carefully as others. I think the latest is SA2005, and any new helmet you buy should be rated that so it will be legal as long as possible. I did a bunch of online searching a couple of years ago when I needed a new helmet, and while Summit and Jeg's prices are pretty good I saved about 5-10% by going to www.OGRacing.com. Don't know how their prices compare now, though :-). You can find cheaper helmets but I kind of believe this is one place to stick with a well known brand like Bell (my choice), Simpson, Shoei, etc. It's your head, so you decide.

Hope this helps, from a post I made in the bracket racing section:

According to the 2006 NHRA rule book in General Regulations section 10:7 Helmets & Goggles:

"As outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes, including motorcycles, must wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications. Snell K-98 is acceptable in place of any Snell M-rated helet.
SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA, full-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.1A = Snell M, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 41.2A = Snell M, full-face helmet

Drivers of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell 95, K98, 2000, 2005 or SFI 31.1, 31.2, 31.1A, 31.2A, 31.1/2005, 41.1, 41.2, 41.1A, 41.2A, or 41.1/2005 Specs."

"Modifications to helmet/visor/sheild are prohibited. All helmets must have the appropriate certification sticker affixed inside the helmet"

Everything else in the section refers to open bodied cars and funny cars.
