Hey guys I know how helpful you all are with everything regarding these cars so I wanted to ask for a little advice. I'm 23 a mechanical engineer (so I'm not a mechanic but I'll use the car to tinker with and learn as I go) and I'm lookin to buy my first TR. I know there are alot of cars out there that are raced, street raced and some just cruisers. Obviously I want to go fast but I was wondering what you guys think. There have been a few for sale near me some are close to stock and some have all the nice go fast mods (DP, bigger turbo/injectors, ttweak, alky, etc.)
Being that I haven't even driven in one yet (but I would like to add the go fast parts in the future I'm sure) do you guys think it would be better to start out with something closer to stock or get one with the mods done? Any comments, help info is greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas

Well, if you really want to learn - especially about HOW these parts work and make the car go faster...start with a near stock car. Learn about the car and what makes power and what is just a bling part with no performance value.

Diving into the deep end can be fairly overwhelming with an already modified car. You have to learn what was done, how the car should act, and take over the tuning.

It seems like you are capable of "getting the picture". I don't think it will be a hard jump for you in either case. It's just more fun to get a good car, make sure it runs correctly, then start adding power. It's more yours that way.

Did that make any sense?

Agreed. I bought a bone stocker 86 and went through the good old Ken Mosher recipe on gnttype.org back in the day. Best way to learn and get personal satisfaction in the process. Chances are a stocker hasn't been beaten up too bad, but you can never be sure unless you know what to look for.

Thanks

Yea that sounds like some good advice. Thanks fella's I really appreciate the input. The only thing that would kind of steer me away from a modified car is probably above all the alky control. Not to familiar with it.
