Help! Cracked casing

I just bought a transmission and it got shipped thru UPS. When I went to installed it there was a hairline crack in ther casing at the bellhousing. Can the crack be fixed or welded or is the trans shot. Please help, I'm not an expert on transmissions but I know most in this board are. Thanks,

Yes it can be repaired if you use a good professional welder.

If it's in the bellhousing only, not as critical as it would be if it were the case, but should be repaired, good luck finding someone that can weld it.

I'll tell you from rebuilding experience. If it is a hairline fracture and it is not in two or more pieces. In the bellhousing area, take a 1/16 drill bit or smaller and find the end of the crack and drill through it. That should keep it from cracking further. the bell housing bolts will hold that thing together.If it scares you that much have it welded, this is just a cheap fix. I cant see the crack, but if it's hairline you'll have no problems.

Did you buy it from a shop or private party? was it insured? Was it cracked before it was shipped? I would want a new one. I don't pay good money for broken (or cracked) parts myself. Someone would get me another one, either ups or the seller.

Like Allen said, dependind on where it is that will work, but w/o seeing it I couldn't recommend it.

Thanks for the info. I got this Tranny to have something to run while I pull my other trans out and get it done. I called a local shop and they said they weld aluminum bellhousings/trans quite a lot. At $68 an hour they said it would probably be done in less than that. This is a high prerformance shop that races cars, I'm hoping they know what they're doing. Otherwise I'll take it to my shop. Thanks a lot for the info, it's appreciated.
