Do you know if the OEM valve springs are still in the car? If so, change them with Comp 980's. Should assist in boosting your top end a bit.

Can't comment on intercooler mods. There are some very experienced Intercolled Hot Air folk  that have lots of good experience with this and I am sure they will comment.

Yes they are still stock do i need to do a cam change? and who sells them? about how hard are they to change? Please let me know. Thanks

You can get the springs from lots of places for around $40/set.
Not hard to replace but you need to remove the up and downpipe and valve covers. The OEM springs have a cup so a std valve spring compressor you get at the store (with the hooks) will not work.

If you get the spring kit from www.postonbuick.com you can get the correct spring compressor.

Depending on your goal and budget, I would not recommend a cam change unless you have problems right now. See link in sig on cams.

Alright yea im looking to get some more top end out of it so maybe this will do the trick, What year do you have? did you do this? on mine its like its just go's balls out off the line but then in about mid 3rd gear it just seems like the turbo isent working anymore or somthing lol Thanks for all the help who sells them springs the cheapest? Got an 84GN with the 980 Comp springs.
Turbo may very well run out of juice too ....... Start with the springs and do a search on tires. Maybe taller tires will help.

I have the biggest M/T Streat Drags on it a 275 size. They are nice. Were did you get your springs from?

Got mine from www.johnsperformance.com
These are nothing real special and you could get by with the cheapest supplier. I needed a few other things and wanted to pay shipping only one time.

Hello i dont see the comp cams one on there just some heavy duty ones they are stiffer than comps. Are thos the ones you got? Thanks

Yes, they are the comp 980's. If you decide to order from there, be sure to ask. Otherwise any other vendor will have them.

From another post ....... Try this number

hey ive converted to intercooled about 3 months ago after alot of research i know what you mean with pulling really hard off the line and then the car just loses its balls around third gear unfortualy it comes down to it being a hot air car. i would have loved to kept it a hotair car but with most of the hot air mods done i was still not too happy. now i know there are alot of fast hot air cars out there and i loved mine when it was but when mine was a hot air car and i would race my step dad i was quicker off the line and then he would creep and creep and creep until he went by now its not to embarrasing being he has a low to mid 11 sec 87 gn but now with my recent upgrades he can only see the back of my buick at last lol so like it has been said many times before in this forum it all depends on what you plan on doing to the car in the future good luck ps jerryl is also right id get rid of those springs asap

Valve springs should help. With mine it seemed like every mod opened up the top end a bit. Notably on the stock longblock were ported intake, bigger turbo, and intercooler that helped up top. I couldn't say exactly what with the new combo did it but it pulls hard to 6,000rpm where the stock longblock fell off at 5,500rpm.

Did I miss something? My assumption would be that you are running out of fuel on the topend. Nothing mentioned about scantool. FIRST before anything else is make sure your not getting KR which would make the car fall on its face evertime. Leaner is always meaner and you will leave the line like a bull, but blow something up sooner or later if your not carefull. Nothing mentioned about fuel system upgrades (fuel pump? hotwire?). How much boost on what octane and fuel pressure? Are using a fuel pressure gauge so that you can make sure that the boost is being matched pound for pound with fp?
Come on guys, first things first

Very very true! My bad.
Just made some "ASS -U - M - PTIONS"!
Damn getting old already.

Anyway, if you don't have a scantool, or don;t think you need one, see my profile pic.

Also im looking into a turbotweek chip are they any good? remmber mine is a 85 Hot car hey better than no GN right? im only 20, right now im running about 15 PSI of boost and running 91 Oct gas and on the weekends im running 120 race gas and i can get about 18 PSI but it still falls on its face fills like the valve are floating bad. Also sorry this is so long but last thing dose anyone know what the stock valve spring Seat LBS are? Thanks for the info again

woah woah woah!!!!! you are just like me 5 years ago!!!! I got my car dirt cheap...had a few mods in it, I took it to the track once, it never saw the track again!!!! Before you even THINK about an intercooler...you need the very basics...you need the 224.00 on ebay SCANMASTER scan tool. Buy it, install it, and let us know what numbers you have on regular driving conditions!!! DO NOT go any further till you get that car monitored, or youll end up just like me...no short block left after all the grinding that wend on the bottom end!!!!

Secondly...to add an intercooler, it is not just piping and an intercooler...you need to get a different turbo, or re-clock the hot air turbo to not shoot directly into the intake....you need to buy/make a set of pipes and elbows to get that IC to fit...you will also need to re-locate the throttlebody, the throttle cables, and possibly a few other things......

Alternatively, you can use a chemical intercooler known as alcohol injection...relativley easy to install, can crank up the boost on pump gas, and can almost eliminate knock!!! remember....if you learn anything as a young guy like I was when i first got my 84 regal t-type, Knock kills.

Get teh scan tool...get a WALBRO 340 feul pump and hot wire kit from RACETRONIX, and get an adj fpr...those are TR basics...from there, get the scan master, get teh guages for fuel pressure, boost, tach, water temp ad oil psi....I think as long as you have those monitored, you can tune in a real nice ET in relatively stock trim.

before the intercooler mod, get everything up to snuff...Make sure the car is ruunning right to begin with...160 degree thermostat, block up the little metal lines going to the throttlebody along the fuel rail (antifreeze goes through them to warm up the TB on cold starts... Get all the basic stuff done waaaaay before you toss in the big toys and find out you need a rebuild!!!!

Most importantly, have fun...take your time...if it were a race to complete, you must have big $$$.....I have been working on my car for 5 years going on six in a few months....I am going for mid 11's and no intercooler...but i KNOW for a fact, i cant do it without all the basic upgrades...I cant put in a bigger turbo without getting the fuel pump...I cant put a real hot cam timing kit in without the basic postwork done...and most of all... my car wouldnt go anywhere without decent exhaust!!!! Go to GNttype.org and look up TR recipes....They are the basic build-ups that people have already tried, tested and proven, and you can duplicate the results!!!

Good luck

Be safe

have fun!

John :)

Ok Thanks for everything that has helped but see how come everyone has turned these cars and other cars with out a scanmaster? $225 is a little much for me im giong to Wyotech right now and i cant aford that, Im sure im not geting any knock and im sure im not geting any grinding in the bottem end i would of hurd it by now and my engine is Clean sounding. But if i can find a scanmaster for cheap see i cant find one for a 85 GN

if not a scanmaster, get one of those knock sensors from postons for like 60 bux i think....they are not as accurate as the scanmaster, but you can tell if you got knock going on in there! it is real important...most of the time, you cannot hear the knocking as loud as you think....the only real test of your motor is when you drop the oil pan and find all the metal shavings like I did...turns out a piston took a crap from knocking i guess, and then each main bearing spun from the contamination! While I was in college, (graduated william paterson u. in may), I bought little stuff here and there...I bought exhaust pipes when i could....i worked two jobs...one full time, and one on weekends, and I kept saving up for each part that I wanted, or needed...set a small goal at first, then work your way up...if you are going ot wyo-tech, i am sure you can find discounted parts like coil packs, thermostats, and all that through your shop professors or their suppliers. I teach Autoshop at Essex County votech in norhtern New Jersey, and WYOTech is coming to visit on monday!!! I am giving my kids some options...lincoln tech is coming in next month and uti has been in twice already!!!! but i digress...

Set small goals...got a part time job? full time job? if so...put 20 bux away a week...in a month, there is a new up-pipe...or in two months, there is the fuel pump andhot wire kit...if you can spare the dough, do what I did...50 a week....i got to the point that i would wait a month or so, go on ebay, find some cheap parts, or talk to a few vendors, let them know you are in college for auto and have limited funds...many of the vendors are just like us in some way...they can help, even if it is a small discount!!!! every bit helps, including what you can stash away each week....keep in mind, you need this car to run right before you can beat the bejesus out of it!!! if you crap it all up racing it, you can be in some major mechanical trouble, with no dime to spare for a rebuild!!! i had some crap luck before I got my new job, and let me tell you, if anybody understands your situation 100%, it is me...if you need anything at all, advice, possibly some parts, i should be able to help!!!

Email me if you need me!
