Pulling onto highway heard a grinding noise then pop, then no boost. It drives fine, no vac leaks, no gaskets blown, but when I try to get on it the vac goes to 0 but no boost.

Also, I'm out of town and need a mechanic in the MD/DE area.

Never mind, seems I broke it really close to Anderson performance.

I see a new turbo in your future...Hopefully that is all it is.

Bryan

This one is fairly new, which pisses me off. I checked it out and it's seized, no play and pieces of the propeller are broken off......WTF WOULD CAUSE THAT!

It is a new MAF, Thanks, I'm gonna check that now.

Heisenberg, I read your "no boost" thread also, I checked all those things before I posted this......So, I pulled the intake and cleared it out, the only thing I found was a piece of the turbo blade. I couldnt find any reason for the failure, it's lke the damn thing imploded on itself.

Now, I heard some rattling prior to the turbo seizing and thought it was a loose TC bolt, guess not.
Time to bring the X-files back for this s@*t. Got another turbo from Anderson Performance, so I'll slap it on after I make sure nothing else is floating around.

Could be the turbo was defective to begin with. Did u inspect this turbo prior to installing it???

87 GN
30 lbs injectors
K&N air filter
Scanmaster
Hydro boost
The rest is stock

Are you certain the turbo is getting oil? Still stock feed or line or turbo saver?

Rick

I had no issues after installing the turbo, but I did take the heads off to replace a cracked exhaust valve recently. I'm checking everything before putting the new turbo on.

It's an after market oil feed, but I'm leaning towards the turbo saver for some piece of mind.

I didn't hear if it was a "new" turbo - or other wise.
I suppose anything is possible.
As I have witnessed first hand!

Did you pull the intercooled off and see if the rest of the blade pieces are in there?

I pulled the intercoooler and it was good. It looks like the blades were bent and mangled, but I found two pieces in the air intake tube and that was it.

You mean the air inlet tube - between the MAF and the inlet (bell) of the turbo?
They got slung forward in the intake tract?
Strange deal this one is.
Bent and mangled.
Wierd.

I just haven't seen enough compressor failures to offer any sort of informed opinion of what would cause catastrophic failure of the compressor wheel.
Perhaps one of the experts can.

If at all possible, I would at least try to match up pieces to the compressor wheel to make sure you got it all.

I also think for piece of mind - I would remove and clean n shake the intercooler.
Just me though.

This is my first catastrophic turbo failure. My guess is it got too hot and coupled with the shaft play allowed the blades to strike the housing and that's all she wrote or it was the friggin butler in the library with a pipe wrench!

Oh - I didn't hear about the side to side shaft play.
You've been holding out on us.
I thought the turbo was relatively "new"-ish.

It was brand spanking new and before I took it off it was completely seized (no movement). When I pulled it and took the blade pieces out it started to move and I found some shaft play. Because it wasbrand new, thats why I was so pissed and trying to figure out how and why it happened. I bought the car with 54K on the engine and I assume original turbo and I beat the hell out of that stock turbo, couldn't break it.

Hopefully it was just a fluke.
