Just limped my way home...

after an hour & a half of driving on the highway, my car (86 TTYPE with 125k) stated to stutter and hesitate, then return to normal (repeated this about 6-8 times) until it finally died. After a half hour cool-down... I was able to start the car and drive it home. There was some little burps along the way home.

This is the 3rd time (since Nov 2001) its done this... but it always restarted after a cool-down period. I've change the coil & module and swapped in another MAF.... thinking that they may be the problem!!! There were no code, the scanmaster# seem normal. (i didn't have my TLiink with me!!)

I read that some Fords had a similar stutter/hesitation/die problems because they were using an incorrect wrong resistor (can't remember where). Do you think the fan resistor could cause this problem. The previous owner put a non-GM fan resistor in. I checked the fan wires and they were hot!!!

Does anyone know what would causes this problem?? Does anyone think it maybe cam sensor related... I've had some intermitent CODE 41 (last time was Wednesday)

It must be something mechnical that gets hot & fails which the ECM does not pick up!!! Fuel pump?? ECM?? tired injectors?? HELP!!!!

TIA.... dave

Sputturing!

 Hi David, I had the same problem on my 87 GN remember last year. It turned out to be a plugged cat convertor in my case. The car would run great for about 20 minutes and then start to sputter and puke, it would eventually stall out. It would not restart unless it cooled down. When I pulled the cat off it was packed full of the ceramic crap in a large lump. Hollowed it out and it ran like a top from then on. Worth taking a look at buddy.

Since you dont get any codes, I would tend to think its a fuel
related problem. Verify fuel psi when its acts up, always start
with the basics:)
If fuel psi is ok, then consider that cam sensor as the next likely
suspect. When mine was going bad, my car had a terrible stumble
and cutting out INTERMITTENTLY:mad:
That one took me a long time to figure out.

Hey Brad.... I've got a 3" dump pipe so there is no cat. I've gotta put back the cat before winter for my e-test.

Topfuel... I've got a fuel gauge now but the last couple times it has happen was in the evening so I couldn't see the gauge. I think I'm going to get a new fuel pump & see if that cures my problems.

thanks.... dave

did it seem worse when you weren't accelerating or at idle? My car recently backfired through the intake on a start and then idled terrible. I thought I might have done some serious damage when it start sputter and then die. Later I realized that the backfire blew half of the hoses off my vacuum block.

pull the cap off the cam sensor and make sure the interrupter ring is tight...sometimes the screw holding it comes loose...or, while the car is running, disconnect the cam sensor....if it smooths out, check the screw first, and if that doesn't do it....try another cam sensor (note: car will not start with cam sensor disconnected)

mycarsucks.... The only time this hesitation/dying happens is when I've been driving for an hour or more on the hwy. When I accelerate or rev the motor when the stuttering occurs, the RPM goes up but it just sputters higher. Eventually, it want doesn't idle anymore and it just dies.

azgn... I still have to check the cam sensor so I'll pull off the car and take a look. I've got a spare but I'm not to keen on installing & adjusting it once it's in.

Most of my driving has been local these days because I afraid to be stuck an hour or more from home!!!

thanks again... dave
