I have a 9" K&N cone filter that I want to use in place of my stock filter. What do I need to buy and where so that I can use this filter? I do not want to relocate the fuel vapor canister so what are my options? Please advise who sells the parts. Thanks

paul

Hi Paul,

You can fit it if you just remove the bolts on the canister and let it slide over a little. If it doesn't have one, you will need to poke a hole in the side of the rubber portion at the base of the filter for the MAT sensor (currently in stock plastic elbow). You can buy a bracket to hold up the MAF sensor, or use a couple of nylon zip ties strategically placed to supprt it from the AC lines. It basiaclly can lay in place, though. Make sure that your MAF hose to the turbo isn't in danger of rubbing on the bracket right in front of the alternator. A hole in that hose is no good! You may need to cut a small piece of hose and nylon tie it to that bracket to protect the MAF hose. Enjoy... you should feel the difference!

Make a MAF Bracket like the one shown. Bolt it to the aircleaner base with I think an M8x1.25 bolt and you are set. The charcoal canister may have to be slightly repositioned.

UNGN, not sure I understand the bracket, do I re-use the flex hose or can I buy a steel one already bent that would work? Do I get rid of old filter housing? Thank you

paul

You use the base (the pedestal part) of the factory air cleaner and shelve the rest (housing, elbow, rod). You can use the bracket with the factory flex hose. Hard pipes differ in length and may or maynot work with the bracket.

Is it necessary to plug in the MAP sensor to the K&N. I have seen a ton of cars with out it.
If so, where is the best place to screw it in at?

BTW. I bought mine from Kirbans for close to $50, bracket included. There was like a 2 or 3 week backorder, and then they forgot to send the bracket with it. I called, and they sent one out that day.:)

Gle, do you mean MAT sensor? What exactly is your setup like and what did you buy from Kirban?

paul

Yes I did mean MAT sensor.:)

I looked through their website and ordered the K&N 9" setup with the MAF bracket.

I also have a set of chrome pipes (MAF and up pipe), but I needed new hose connecters (rubber that goes over where the two pipes connect). I was going to wait to install the filter untill I get all the pipes put in. That way I can do it all in one shot. Also need to clean the oil out of my IC.:)

I have since relocated my charcoal canister, but when I first put in the K&N..

I took off the elbow that goes from the old air can to the MAF. I then put the air filter on this elbow and fed it up from below the bumper so the open end stuck thru behind the headlight. Then I took a piece of 3inch pvc, 3 rubber hoses and clamps, and a heater hose from an air cooled VW. I had to cut the ends from the hose and clean out the inside. I used a small piece of black 3inch pvc because the vw hose was a tad too short. Also spliced in additional wire to reach the new location of the temp sensor. I left the old air can for the time being to support the MAF. Cold air and less than $15.00 of parts.
Pics on my page below, but no detail on the filter.
