Pretty stock 87 GN 90,000 miles. took it out today for a nice drive (live on the east coast ,dont get too many warm sunny days in march) about 20 min into drive trans started to shift very fast when leaving a stop sign. It actually felt like it was going from 1 st. to 3rd. and then od in about 50 feet. if i got into it seemed ok but converter seemed to lock up early. Then when coming to a stop it felt like i was driving a stick and not pushing in the clutch. it felt like it was still trying to pull. it would eventually stop and felt like converter would let loose. Kick down cable is connected. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like the convertor is locked up. Maybe the coil is shorted? Could try unplugging the trans and try driving it to see if it acts normal. That will prevent power from getting to the coil. Also try shifting into lower gears and see if it acts normal.

It is pretty common in these transmissions for the solenoid that controls the torque converter to go. Sometimes it will not let the TC disengage when the brake is pressed or when no throttle is applied (slowing down conditions). It's a pretty simple job to replace it, but it does involve taking down the transmission pan, taking a transmission fluid bath, and cutting and crimping some wires. Do what Shadow said, and if it fixes it, we know the problem. I recommend a large plastic tub, as big as the transmission, to place under the pan as a fluid catcher. Might as well do a filter and gasket while you're there!

Thanks for the help I'm going to tackle it later this week! Anyone have any advice on trans fluid?

These transmissions take Dex 3 from the factory, I don't think I would change that on a stocker. If it were built, I'd go with what the builder recommends.

Thanks Serviced the trans and replaced solenoid valve today. drove car twice and it hasnt acted up yet so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!!!
