Hi... This is just a imagination...

But if I have say 3200 9/11 converter and a stock turbo... Is this bad or good ?

I mean, it will really spool up that turbo without problem at the line right ? Is there any disadvantages to have a higher stall converter than matched with your turbo ?

Maybe that it locks to late ? And get much spinn ?

Daniel

Better get some tires. That 3200 will flash to 4500 pretty fast under boost. The looser the converter, the higher it will flash under boost.

Next problem is it flashes to 4500 then you have to shift at 4800 with the stock cam. So get ready for some driving as well.

eave the D5 with the stock turbo, then when you change turbo's.. do the converter.

Its just labor and some fluid.

Thx Julio, your the man :) Well I still got D5 and TA49, but it feels like its a good combination. I am just worried about burning out the orginal tranny... It will happen pretty soon I guess.

Daniel

a 3200 911 will be a killer addition to your combo.itll stall this high only under boost.

That 49 will work better with a stock Garrett .63 housing using the D5. The Precision .63 housing is a little much on some cars. And will feel laggy.

Now a TA49 is larger than a stock turbo. So did you already get a TA49? Your original question mentioned stock turbo, not stock appearing. Those two are different. And definitely the upgraded turbo can benefit from an upgraded converter. Tho a 2600-2800 would be my call on a TA49. If you havent bought the turbo, and are planning on buying a turbo/converter.. get the 3200-3400 and a larger turbo like a TA61, TE60, TE44..

The higher the stall, the looser the throttle feels..

Say it like this, my ex-protorque 12 inch was rated at 2800. yet I could stand on the brakes.. and build it up to 3800-4000 RPM's at 15 PSI boost. For my ex-PT51 turbo, it was a very good match.

This new 3600 9x11 is way wicked :D even with the new TE67 turbo  hehe

there will be a significant advantage in the torque multiplication characteristics of the convertor between a 3200 9/11 and a 12 inch restall in this application.it is very difficult to build 12 and up boost psi with a restalled d5 verses the 3200 9/11.

The stock D5 and stock turbo are an excellent combination. Plenty of low 12 second cars running this combination. Some even faster. Its a great balance of spool up vs traction.

The big problem lies once you fray from this setup, cuase there will always be some compromise in drivability.

I like the higher stall converters, but the crispness at lower rpms is long gone. Nothing wrong with the 3200 9x11 converter. I just think its a little much for a stock turbo.. and traction issues happen. For a car on slicks all the time..not an issue. For a street car trying to get play.. it can overwhelm the tires. The less rotating mass of the 9x11 can also help with performance.

I guess me and Chris are saying the same thing. Just pointing different angles to the same issue.

my view and resulatant approach to this is that the stock motor is dead below 3400 rpms unboosted so if you want to get the thing to leave in its usable powerband all the time with a slight difference in fuel economy the 3200 is the selection.if you want to take off from light to light and eat your 302 equipt 5 speed rivals mustang this is the answer.with 0 boost these things perform like a stocker even in the mileage department ,and when locked up there is no difference.

Hmm ok... How do I know if I have garrett .63 or Precision .63 housing ?

I have a TA49 installed, I bought Andreas old one. I also has his old MSD #50 (Well... not that old, just some weeks) that I probably will install in the week. So now we begin to talk serious things soon :) My plans dont stop here... Thats why I am worried about my tranny. Maybe I did wrong that went with the TA49... Maybe I would have buyed a bigger one from the beginning.

We will see what happens... Some answers will I have the 22 august, when I will go for my first track visit this year. The "track" is a open road, so not that much traction on it. The goal is low 8:s (the track is a 1/8 mile)

Daniel

Thx Chris! Well Andreas also got this 3500 9x11 converter... but that will be overkill right ?

Daniel

Yes it is. We have talked about me buying his tranny :)

Well so... I have to upgrade my turbo once more and then get another converter. At that time the tranny will be dead also...

Daniel

Ok, I got no race the 22 august, they canceled it.

Now... A 9x11 3500 converter and a TA49... Is that drivable ?
It will be easy to build up boost to 15 psi on the foot brake right ? I am sorry, I dont know how a converter works really.
Will the tranny still shift at 4800 rpm or will it overstall ?

Daniel

Too much.. as soon as you put boost/tq on it like 25 PSI.. it will stretch the converter way over 5000 rpm's. If you do a cam, then it can work since then you can make more power past 5000 rpm's.

I have a 3600 and need to shift at 5700-5800 to get a 600-700 RPM drop. If I shift at 5000..it stays at 5000 the whole run.

The turbo exhuast housing if its a precision will have the letters "PRECISION" very very visable. On a garrett housing, no HUGE letters.

Do I blow headgaskets if I drive the car over 4800 rpm or do I just loose power ?
