High volume timing cover readings

I was checking the recipts the previous owner of my car gave me, and noticed he installed a high volume timing cover. Now, i just changed the oil, and put in 5 quarts of mobile 1 10w30. it idled low, at around 10psi. I then proceded to check the dipstick after letting it sit for a while. The oil was just over the line of the "acceptable" area with the little hatchmarks. I kept adding more oil untill the level on the dip was right around normal, toward the top of the "acceptable" area. now(checked after running and letting sit.) now at startup, pressure jumps high to about 30-40 and eventually settles, kinda scared me when i saw that since im used to the low idle. does that highvolume timing cover require more oil? or is it just throwing off the readings on the dip?

any suggestions? i drained about half a quart, and it still shot up high, like 40-50 ended up draining the other half, and it's down low again, down to the 10s!

A HV timing cover will not affect the engines oil volume, as opposed to a non-HV cover.. If the engine is cold, I would expect oil psi to be 60#s at start up. With the HV cover, I'd expect at least 12-15 psi hot idle in neutral.

I am seeing ~70psi "cold" part throttle driving. Meaning I let the car warm up for a few minutes... and drive sanely until pressure settles under 40psi @ idle in gear.

Hot, I see ~22-25psi @ idle in gear, and 60psi in gear, at any rpm over 2500.

I modded my stock cover with the HV kit, and added the booster plate. I am also running 20w-50 as I have eliminated the oil cooler from the system in the interm. I am quite sure that 10w-30 Synthetic would drop my cold pressures some, but it doesn't matter much to me.

I always thought it's a no-no to run 20-50W in our cars. Better off to run 10-30W or even 5-30W. I have a high volume oil pump on my car and at 2500 RPM hot see 55-60#'s and 20-25 at hot idle with Mobil1 10-30W. Car has 92,000 miles and has seen almost nothing but Mobil1 and has never had the heads off.

The anti-drainback valve in your oil filter may not be holding. That will give you changes in your oil level on your dipstick
