They're supposed to run on premium not regular. In 78 when they came out the EPA required all cars to run on regular for emissions but after the CCC system came out GM decided that the car should run on premium. Over at the 301 garage Joe (the owner) has been doing some research on the TTA and found out about the EPA standards from one of the GM engineers at the time. The engineering group wanted it to run on premium but the tailpipe emission standards required the lowest possible so it was decided that it had to run on regular, Put premium in it and it will run much better.;)

They were designed to run on 87 octane, because that was the only unleaded gasoline at the time. Premium Unleaded just started reaching the market about 1982, and then it was tough to find. In 1982, one magazine found that 0-60 was a full second quicker on Premium.

Those crappy ¼ miles times in the magazines were all run on 87 octane.

They knock even on Premium, so the higher the octane, the better. Read this for a description of how poorly they run on 87. http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/threads/1982-buick-turbo-regal-short-take-car-driver.395996/
