i have seen some people make air intakes from parts from home depot what would you need to make this and what sizes and materials, any help appreciated

what I did starting from the filter behind the headlight:
K&N cone, 3" opening
black 3" pvc 90 degree albow
black 3" pvc straight piece about 5" long
rubber 3" coupling with 2 hose clamps - from the PVC isle at HD (this also had an aluminum sleve that I pitched)
VW heater hose that is just a hair over 3"(was handy in the garage, needed to remove insulation inside)
rubber 3" coupling (same as above)
MAF in stock location.

I later added an aluminum arm to the bottom of the filter.

maybe $20, excluding the VW hose, but you can get those at the yard cheap. No, it doesn't look high dollar, but being all black except for the clamps, it doesn't look out of place. My car is a daily driver, not a showcase under the hood. I have pics, they are poor, but I can put them on my webspace if you like.

cool man i think it awsome do you know any performance numbers as far as any gains you made installing it over the stock air intake, thanks again for the pics

No specs. I believe that was the first thing I did to the car, before I went to the track.

I used a 90 degree and a 45 degree aluminum exhaust elbow from the local Freightliner shop, cost about $35 each and 2 sewer couplers from HD on mine.

I can see on Direct Scan that the intake air temp is always very near the outside temp, way better than having an open filter under hood or even the KB type system.

On the other hand, here's my PVC intake on my truck, you see, PVC can be made to look very good :) for less than $10.

Looks like they have the same aluminum exhaust elbows I used for $24!! So you'd need a 45 and 90 elbow and 1 4" sewer coupling and 1 3"to4" neck down sewer coupling from HD and a K&N with a 4" opening....or you could go the 3" or 3.5" route too, all for about $50.

forget home depo i used 3 in ss 90 's kn 9in filter and kb 3in blue hoses . homedepo looks like sh*t do it once do it wright

hey micheal that looks really sharp, thats the way i wanna do it, what material did you use and of what sizes, thanks

man those are some good pics to, but whats a hooker "U" and how much was it and the total cost to make the intake

It's been a while so I don't remember how much it cost in total. The "U" is a "U" shaped pipe, 3" in diameter manufactured by Hooker Headers. You cut it in half to make 2 "J"s. One "J" comes off the inlet, the other "J" connects to the first "J" and allows you to put the air filter behind the bumper on the LH side. I want to say it was about $40 total - $20 for the pipe and $20 for the silicone hose. But, again, it's been a while so I don't remember exactly.

HTH,
Jim

cool, do you know any performance gains as far as numbers, comparing the homemade one to stock
