This just crossed my mind for some reason, so I thought I'd ask while I am thinking about it this time...

...I have an 87 GN, third owner, all original, except for MAFT/ LT1 MAS and true stainless dual exhaust. I have owned the car since '99.

One day while driving, I heard the turbo start to spool up, then a distinct POP, then...no turbo acceleration. I was able to get home, where I discovered a hole, smaller than a dime, in the short hose that goes from the turbo to the intercooler.

I took what was left of the original hose to a local auto parts dealer, and he sold me a replacement of equal length and diameter, but reinforced with steel. I have encountered no problems of that nature since.

My question is...does anyone know what could have caused that? I have, off and on, been concerned about the possibility of impeller damage or something like that, but have never thought to post until now. Thanks.

It was most likely old age and fatigue of the rubber, i have seen this a few times and its not anything to worry about. The rubber hose take a beating with the heat, oil and pressure they are subject to in the underhood enviroment. You did not need a a wire reinforced hose for future reference. There are vendors here that sell good replacement hose kits.

If it was a 25 year old factory hose it's a miracle this didnt happen sooner. They sucked when brand new. Using a good hide with a quality clamp will drastically reduce hose failure and blow off
