What is typically done to add extra fwd and direct clutches? are the backing plates machiched down or are thinner steels used or is it a combination of both?

My way

In my limited experience---I don/t do anything with the pressure plates. I have some aluminum rings made to replace the ring that sits in the piston ( it is the same dia. on top as the frictions) which gives me a FLAT apply area instead of a thin ring. It sits somewhat lower in the hole and I use .055, .077 and .090 thick Kolene steels to get an extra friction in direct (7) with .050 clearance. I also sort the same steels to get the .050 in forward with the factory 4 frictions. Alto make thinner frictions (.055) stock is .077. Have not used any thin frictions yet. @ my power level the above procedure is working good for me.
