how did you meet and fall in love with your turbo T... was it a dark stormy night... was it love at first sight... was it rusting in a garage somewhere, was it passed down through family generation, was it bought from a showroom... or was it resurrected and put back on the road from car heaven or hell... how did you become interested in turbo buick cars... and start working on them (im tryin to shadow some professionals so that i can learn to fix my car aside from school)
I got my first car from a private owner off of craigslist on "Tha EastSide" for 1800 plus 200 extra for some Illuminated 12 inch Legacy speakers. This car had quite a bad history that i remain intentionaly ignorant about... i dont want to know what this car has been through. Not a good start for a turbo buick relationship
in '95 I was driving home from visiting my parents and saw it on a used lot at a body shop. I knew what it was and always like them since I had a '79 Sunbird with a Buick V6 in it.
I stopped to check it out and took it for a test drive. Hooked!!!
Called my dad and asked for a loan. Drove to his house and got a check and came back, bought it, and drove it home. My fiance could tell by how I drive I was pulling into the apartment parking lot but knew something was different about the sound. She seemed confused when she looked out the third story window at me getting out of this black T.
I had to have her drive me back to the used car lot (50 miles) to pick up my Caprice later that night.
I have owned it (and been repairing it) ever since.
I first saw and heard this car 2 years ago when I lived in vegas as an Army recruiter. I was cruising along around dusk on a long straight road when I thought I heard a jet fighter coming up behind me. I was like WTF is that? and next thing I knew, this black blur passed by me and was gone as quick as it came. I did manage to read that little badge on the driver's side and googled it. Fast forward to last month found one 4-sale 6 miles from my house. Saw it, drove it, paid 11k cash, took it home
My friend wanted to get a GN and after he showed me some video's on the internet then I wanted one(he ended up with a RX7). So on the way back from getting a drug test for work, my 88 Camaro was in need of water (Busted Rad) and as I walked through the bushes of this transmission shop to get water it was just sitting there. I talked to the owner and after about a month of looking at the car I finally bought it. I still regret the desision , I though you might be able to get body parts for these cars, boy was I mistaken . Oh and I got one before that off of ebay and it windowed the block before I got it home . I'm having really good luck with these cars
3 years ago I was looking on a local fishing discussion board. I went into the classified section. There was a post for a T-Type for sale. I knew what a Grand National was but not a T. Anyway I read through the comments and was interested. I looked on Ebay etc to see what they sell for etc. I called the owner (6banger on this board) and he informed me about the damage to the fender, door, quarter panel on the passenger side. I never even noticed it on the picture. Without even looking at it I went and got a cashiers check and drove out to see it. After the test drive I handed him a check and took it home. It was totally a midlife crisis impulse purchase. I had it painted the next summer. The previous owner took great care of it and drove it on a regular basis. I am still very pleased with my decision. I bought it with 97k miles and will probably flip 100,000 this year or early next year.
I had been looking for the right car for probably three years. I knew I wanted to either find a ridiculously low priced, steal of a deal on a real GNX (not likely to happen) or I was going to build a X clone out of a GN. I knew I didn't want to cut on an original car that would be more suited for a "purist". As it turned out, in October of last year, my car was listed on eBay. It was a 2-owner 86 GN with 41k original miles, but had been somewhat cloned into a GNX by the original owner back in 87. Turned out to be a sweet deal for me since the car already had been cut on and had GNX flares, fender louvers & wheels already installed. The current owner had the car priced really well and I bought it sight unseen. Yea, I know I took a HUGE chance, but I had a gut feeling that said "get THAT car". So I did and it was in even better shape than I expected. I have been having a blast with the car ever since.
I have an 83 NA I was going to clone into an SFI car and while looking at evilbay I found the 83 T on it and no one had bid yet. Started at $500 and reserve not met so I figured what the heck. I knew I wouldn't win because the reserve hadn't been met. The auction ended and the guy sent me a second chance offer of $500. I thought about it for a few days, checked with my boss to see if he'd let me off to go get it, and got a friend to go with me to Kansas. Brought her home and started looking for the parts I needed to fix her up and now since I got the 82 GN I've decided to use her for a parts car for the 82.
If it helps I've wanted a GN since I was 20 and now I've got one but she's gonna take a while to make road worthy.
There she was in a strip club bar OHHH thats a different story.
She was in the regoinal printed want ads prior to what is now Craiglist.
After selling my GN & hating Black, bucket seats & floor shifter,,,,,, I knew I wanted a TT. My price point was set to find one in the 6 to 7k range.
So what did I find. 1st was BLACK T with red inside. offered 4500 cash he did not take.
Next was White T with blue inside $7500. Nice car but lowered suspension did not feel right.
Last was Limited T.... WHAT FKIN color do ya think? YUP BLACK which I hate.
But it had all the goods I wanted. Shifter column, bench seat, astro roof. the perfect grampy car. the rest is history.
Back in 1995 when I had a 95 6spd Formula. It had a few mods and ran low 13's which seemed fast at the time LOL.
I was sitting at a light when this "old" guy in a silver and black car pulled up next to me and was eyeballing me. I threw him a rev from the mighty flowmaster and he just sorta of laughed a bit. I remember thinking to myself "we'll see how funny it is when I smoke you old man"
He let me get about 2 car lenghts on him before he sucked the smile off my face. It was good a low 12 car or better the way he ran me down.
I quickly decided it was time to go to McDonalds even though I wasn't hungry There was another light coming up.
Well you know how they say "..things have a way of working themselves out...)
I found mine on Craigslist a few months after my Cutlass was stolen. It was actually owned by a friend who specializes in these cars and is originally out of Napa. It hasn't traveled far from home. When my friend agreed to hold onto it until I got my insurance payout I was happy as hell. Took longer than I thought but I finally picked it up on my birthday. I think it may be a keeper.
Back in 05, I bought a hail damaged 96 Honda Accord on a storm I was working in GA. slicked it out and drove it for about 2 weeks when I got home. I has headin into town and noticed this gold regal on a "Buy here, Pay here" car lot...I looked as I was driving by and it had GN wheels on it..I thought to myself...is it?..nahhh couldnt be. But I couldnt stand it anymore and turned around to go check it out. And there is was. The ugliest 57k mile 87 light chestnut Limited Turbo T I'd ever seen. I asked about it, and the guy said "There's something special about this car, I dunno what, but everyone wants it.." I popped the hood and it had a TA.49, 3 inch downpipe and cold air kit. rest was stock. I drove it around some, and it needed alot of work but I thought what the heck. I asked if he wanted my Honda Accord on trade, and he said REALLY??? Sure!! SO I gave him my Honda and $1000 and drove it home and restored it!
Honda Accord=$3000
Extra =$1000
Total $4000 for my Limited:biggrin:
