How do you get the Cam sensor bolt out. What a PITA

What type of wrench is everyone using. I use a 14mm short socket but the problem is that is now stuck there, the only way to get the socket out will be to remove the entire sensor. Has anyone changed the bolt to a TORX or Hex? Any other tricks???

If you are going to be removing the cam sensor, then just pull up on it and the socket (on the bolt) will have slack.
If you aren't going to remove the sensor, then why are you going to remove the bolt
If to reset the sensor then, the bolt doesn't have to be removed, just loosen up a turno or so.

I had to make an adjustment on the sensor. When I pulled the extension the socket stayed on the bolt and is now pinned between the bolt and the bottom of the sensor. I can get the extension back on with some force and turn the bolt but can't get the socket off. I usually just leave the socket there but wondered if anyone had any other ideas.

A 14mm 1/4" drive swivel socket works well

I use a standard distributor wrench...it's got 2 sets of bends in it...think it's 9/16...you access the bolt from the front of the engine with this wrench...

9/16" 1/4 drive shallow swivel in a 12" 1/4 drive extension is how I get to it

Same thing happened to me when changing the cam chain.

Try to rotate the socket until its "neutral", not locked against the bolt head in the tightened or loosening position. Remove the extension and use a long pair of needle nose pliers, put one jaw inside and one jaw on the O.D. of the socket, squeeze and pull at the same time, after 2 or 3 tries it should come off the bolt head.

Or you can try one of those magnetic retrievers after loosening the socket or if you can try a piece of rubber hose that is a tight fit over the socket.


Buy one of the offset wrench as others suggested, it works like a charm.

Ahhh, do like me and just leave the socket on there for the next time you need to get to the bolt. I consider the socket an extension of my car now.

Remove sensor cap, 9/16 1/4" drive socket on a 1/4" drive "wobble"extension 10" long. Retrieve bolt with magnet.

A small piece of electrical tape or "dumb-dumb" putty in the socket will hold the bolt in the socket for reinstall.
