How does a MAF effect how the car runs?

I recently went to the strip and the car didn't run the number I thought it should.

I took the car back home and did a fuel pressure test and I had 1 to 1. At the end of two runs my check engine light came on and I had low voltage to the MAF.

The car idled up and down constantly but went down the road fine. I rapped on the MAF and the car died.

I ordered a new LT1 MAF which I don't have yet.

My question is what effect does a faulty MAF have on WOT performance of the car if any. Before I went to the strip the car ran fine, if I stabbed it the car responded.

At the strip the car launched fine so I didn't have any side effects like I have now with a faulty MAF.

Just wonder what if any performance difference I'll have between my stock (faulty) 3" A/C Delco MAF to the LT1 MAF I'll be installing?

someone correct me if I am wrong but once the MAF reads 255(I think) it doesn't effect anything more with fuel delivery.

when you get a bad MAF the default setting is pig rich to keep you from joining the DOTC club.
I went with a 3.5 LS1 maf and a translater.

I didn't get the LS1 but Full Throttle said the LT1 will meet my goals.

I'm just curious how the LT1 MAF will be better than the A/C delco assuming both of them are performing perfectly?

Is it just a reliability issue or is there a performance gain?

LT1 maf VS Stock????
if thats the question
I went with the LS1 because including the translater it was about $150.00 cheaper
plus if i am on a road trip and the maf takes a dump just about any parts store will have one on hand.

That's a good point!

I think the difference between the LS1 and the LT1 is the LS1 is larger diameter.

I also got a translater with the LT1

It was almost $400 for what I bought. Is the stock MAF $150 more????

Your idle is what will be noticed the most when you switch out MAF. A lot smoother and no real ups or downs rpm wise. Your AFR will change also but it may vary due to the your build. You will be impressed with it for sure!

Damn there's a lot of misinformation in this thread.....

To answer your original question... If your stock MAF is reading dead nuts accurate (it's not BTW) there will be no change upgrading to a translator (set flat)

Here in the real world, it makes easy work of some fine tuning to the average street car, gets rid of some transitional wheelspin knock, and allows one to upgrade to a much more robust and consistent MAF that doesn't flake out and send you on wild goose chases like the stock unit does.

Other than the price of admission there is NO downside to the upgrade.

You can check the MAF on the Powerlogger for dropouts too. That's what mine did.

What kind of times did you run at the track?

I ran a 13.5 at 100 mph.

Thanks for the answer! My car seemed to run fine up until the day the check engine light came on and the idle varied up and down. I was hoping the old MAF would of had more to do with how my car ran at the track. Once I get my powerlogger installed and a wideband I bet I'm either going to se a very rich condition or very lean and the alky is covering it up.

The purpose of the MAF is to measure the ammount of air entering the engine. If it's bad it's sending the wrong info to the computer so your mixture will be off so performance suffers. +1 on what earlbrown said.

One would think so but it sure didn't happen.

I think I'll get a personalized plate that reads "IdLOSE"

I just had the same code happen to me. Swapped mafs and translator and no Change..going xfi so don't really care now..it ended up being the grounds on the back of the passenger head. Also check continuity to the ECM

Keep beatin' on it w/o the proper diagnostics, and your choice of lic plates may come to be reality..Including a membership in the DOTCC.
