I was just wondering how much HP and Toeque a stock tranny can take? There's another GN that I'm gonna look at that has 333 HP and 475 ft. lbs. of torque. Now I'm not sure if the owner has done anything to the transmission, but he has done a lot of other things. So would the stock tranny be able to take that much power? Also, would it be streetable, as in can be used for daily driving? And would T-Tops be a concern for the structural stability becuase of the power it's putting out? Thanks

Kevin

If you drive like me it could be a matter of time before you are beefing up that tranny. It would seem that if he did a bunch of mods to the engine that he would of done some work to the tranny. But if he didnt drive the car hard he might not of ran into tranny problems yet.Test drive and make sure it has nice crisp shifts before you buy.
As for a t-top car,to keep them tight you will want to put a rearseat brace kit in and front frame braces also if it doesnt already have them.Open the door and look near the hinges that is where t-top cars usually start to crack.
As for streetable Hell Yeah!!my friend runs a 10.98 in the 1/4 and his is streetable.

I dyno'd mine at 330/457 when it wasn't too long after that the tranny started to go south. Then I did the right thing and sent it to PTS in Sacramneto, CA and had Bruce take care of it. Can I say HOLY **** on this board? It was what the doctor ordered.

"It was what the doctor ordered"..

Yeah, yeahhh, I like that....sounds good huh?....yep it fits...
DR. BRUCE, pts....Dr. Bruce I presume..?

Update: I talked to the owner today and he says the GN has 150,000 miles on it and that the transmission is stock. He says that there isn't any problem with the transmission. Do you guys think this car would be worth it considering the high miles? I'm having a hard time believing that with that much power that the transmission would hold up. Any suggestions?

It will hold up.............................

till it breaks!!

Then it will not work anymore......:D

AND
Dr.? hrmmmm Kinda has a nice ring to it, don't it?
Now, Dr of what? "Oh Honey, Where is that wife? Appointment needed....ROFL:D

I have no idea how much power I am making with 17lbs of boost. but my tranny was rebuilt with stock parts and heavy duty clutches. When I bought the car it had 25k on the tranny and almost exactly 5k miles later it went "boom" I drive my car with some aggressiveness but maybe 20% of the time so I guess it all depends on how you drive and how well it was kept up. Best bet would be to have a GOOD builder build one for your combo so you wont have to worry about it!! JMHO

I had 230-50 hp on a stock rebuild for a couple years with no probs.

In the trans buisness I've heard stock can take 500hp, but of course your not going to get mileage out of it. Slightly beefed I've heard fairy tales of 750hp plus.

How much HP and Torque can a stock Transmission

well i just put in a pretty fresh built stock brf and it lasted 1 day...lost second gear completly tonight..

thinking either broke band anchor or anchor pin...either way i'll be calling Bruce to get me a wide band and hardened anchor now :(

I think the original question may have been better stated "how much punishment can a stock trans take?" HP/torque isn't nessaserily the prob it's what you do with it and how ya use it I think.

200 4R + 500 Caddy

Folks kinda got off track responding to your question.

I've got a basically stock 200 4R behind a stock 1971 500 Caddy engine in a 4200 pound 1964 Impala, has not broken yet--but I expect that it will and probably the forward drum spline will shear off. The Caddy should be putting out around 535 ft lbs of torque and 365 horsepower.

As I understand it, a PTS equiped 200 4R will reliably handle 800 ft lbs of torque.

I think HOTTOGO stated it better--how much punishment.

Hope that helps.

Now if we're talking about an original stock tranny with 150k on it I wouldnt expect it to take too much abuse for very long. But if he means the tranny was rebuilt to stock specs at some point then it could hold up for a while.
