Yes, A very few have gone low 9's and even high 8's. Those blocks were extensviely reworked and reinforced (caps, girdles and other black magic). I wouldn't characterize those HP levels as typical for the limit of a 109 block.

IMO, the 109 block can easily handle 500-500 without caps or a girdle.......as long as the engine see no detonation. Add the caps and girdle, forged internals, and the same block should handle 550-650.............again with no detonation.

Detonation will destroy a 350 HP engine.

Correction: I intended to say 500-550 with all stock internals.......duh.

Stock crank and rods

I have a 109 with a stock crank and rods with 4 billet caps and a girdle. The motor made 525 rear wheel horsepower @ 21 psi through a TH400 trans, and ran a 6.455 @ 105 in the 1/8 mile @ 24.5 psi. I'm guessing 575-600 at the rear wheels. only mods to the rods were arp rod bolts. Polished crank.

Thats very close to a 9.9999999 sec 1/4 mile!

Mines been 6.6@ 105.76 in the 1/8 and 10.35@ 130.99 in the quarter. That was in a 3500# car with me in it. It did 460 rwhp on the dyno. It has a stock block with two center cars, APR studs and piston bolts, stock rods with polished beams, and JE pistons. Next time it comes out I want to put a girdle on it.

What's a "Piston Bolt"?

What about those "APR studs" too? Must be the new low interest kind.:p

We have a local that went 9.68 with billet main caps. ARP main studs and
ARP "piston bolts"

however, at that HP level it's just a matter of time before

I wish people cancer, AIDS, and death............................but NEVER do I wish a blown motor on somebody:(

not typical nor would i say go do it but
my build is stock block, crank, rods, pistons, mains and all the bolts
no billet caps ,girdle studs or fancy bolts in the bottom , no fillied jackets
iron heads but they are held with studs

has a few low 10s at near 130 slips , most passes mid 10s 127

as for how long it would last , I can only say what it has done so far
upwards of 300 passes , almost all mid 10s and all off transbrake launching in 1.4x to mid 1.5 range
