There is a car locally that is being parted out. The turbo and intercooler are missing, otherwise it appears stock. He says the engine turns over ok. What do you guys think would be a fair offer? The idea would be to use it as a core for a new engine build.

If it didnt get water in it it's worth $500.

The real value is more like 800 to 1000 if it turns over freely, there are a lot of parts that are still usable, that is if you get the complete motor in the pic. That is if no water got in there of course.

Thanks
Bill

why is the car getting parted out? if the body is in good shape- not crunched up or rusted out- then it's probably being parted out because of the engine or trans..
i'd run a compression test, then remind the guy that other than a few things- pistons, intake manifold, crank- the engine isn't really anything special compared to any other 231 that GM put in millions of cars in 1987...

He's asking $1500 lol. I was thinking $500 max.

If this a GOOD core engine it is worth $1500.

By good, I mean the block must have only normal cylinder wear and the crank is standard, and all the attached parts shown are part of the deal.

I would try to negotiate a lower price, but would personally pay the $1500 with the condition it would be paid in full after verifying condition of the internal parts, AND that it IS a 109 block.

Can you buy the whole car?? If so, and a right price, you could part it out, and have the drive train for free.

What does the rest of the car look like?
The engine looks like it was exposed to the elements for a while...

The body looks to be in solid condition , but the car is very ruff. Asked for more pics weeks ago with no reply. Basically a gutted car with drivetrain that looks like it hasn't run in 10 years. It's on Craigslist $2900 . Way to much.

Yeah I started this thread for a friend who is planning to build a new motor and trying to save his original 15k motor. He emailed the seller and he said he was trying to get the engine running , and his price was $1500. I saw he already sold the hood in his latest craigslist ad. If there wasn't water in the engine yet, there will be soon.

The angles on the vents are all wrong. The back edge angle doesn't match the angle of the door to fender line.

The front edge angle to too severe. IOW, it is too 'pointy.'

Then the angle of the trailing edge of the vent openings doesn't match the angle of the front edge.

Not easy to see these differences, but the louvers just aren't right. That and the guy mentions it being a T-Type Grand National. When it is obvious that there are T-Type emblems on the car...

Being an '87 isn't it a Turbo-T?

In that regard I believe you are correct. There are T emblems on the car, with the ad listing it as both a t-type and a Grand National. Has to be one or the other, not both, even though an '87 would be a Turbo-T.
