How much oil DO you need?

I have one of the first PTE turbo savers that came with a -6 line and fittings. I noticed the newer ones come with a -4 line. I have been having some smoking issues at times and I am trying to eliminate all possibilites. How Much oil does a standard bearing turbo really need? This motor is fresh and the turbo has about 1000 miles on it. The turbo is a PT-70-1. I run 10-40 oil and have about 25psi idle hot. I was thinking about tapping some threads into the oil fitting and loctiting a set screw in there and just drilling it out to the proper size. What is the smallest size hole I could get away with and still have proper lubrication? Anyone? thank,jeremy

If you are running a -6 feed line on that PT70 turbo, I can assure you that you are flooding the cartridge and oil is getting past the oil seals. If you've run it this way for awhile, there is a very good chance that you may have damaged the turbine side oil seal and it will need repair. I'd recommend you remove that -6 oil feed line and replace it with a -4 AN oil feed line immediately. Then pop your downpipe off and see if you have oil pouring out around the turbine wheel. If so, the oil seal is shot. But replace the line and fittings first and see if the smoking goes away.

Do not put a restrictor inside that line. You will burn up the cartridge. The solution to your problem is replacing that -6 feedline with a -4 size line. Give PTE a call, they have what you need. Pete or Jim should know exactly what you need. And you need to specify that this is for an 86-87 model. You will also need the two fittings. Honestly, when it's all said and done, you might as well purchase a new Oil Filtration system and get everything new, especially if your kit is one of the first ones made. They came out with that kit back in '94. I can only imagine how worn and swollen the hoses must be if it is an original '94 kit.

Patrick, thanks for the response... I bought the kit in 1996. The main oil lines have been upgraded to braided stainless line and the appropriate fittings. As far as the oil feed line is concerned.... why cant i restrict the fitting down to the internal size of a -4 line?? wouldnt that have the same effect? I figured I could tap the fitting for a 1/4in set screw and the drill out the set screw to the proper size. The fitting original size is about .180. I also have access to a full hydraulic hose shop if need be. Thoughts? thanks, jeremy
