I was going to buy my paint and paint flakes from house of kolor so it would be cheaper for my painter to do. First, has anyone had experience with this brand of paint, if so what can you tell me? Next, how many gallons of paint should it take to finish the car? what about flakes?

TIA

I restore and customize cars for a living. I use HOK all the time. To paint a GN. 4 qts for the outside two qts for the jams and trunk area. Flakes you need one contaner. Then you will need 2 qts of SG100 to mix the flakes into. Then you will need 1 gal. of clear with the hardner to go with that. You will need at least 2 gals of reducer for all the paint. Don't mix defferant company products. If your using House of Kolor use everything that they sell for its use. Its a very good product if used correctly. As for the flakes. A little goes along way.

nice post

thanks, good to have someone who does custom work checking this out.

Wouldn't you need a couple gallons of clear w/ hardener. I know you wouldn't if your not going to wetsand, but each gallon will give you 3 coats. Not much for blocking out the orange peel. ;)

Ok, sorry to bother you guys but it would be great if I could get this out of the way. The car I am going to get is a frame off resto, everything is primed ready for paint, the door jams/trunk/etc. have all been cut in mettalic gray (stock color on some Ts). So I am trying to get as close as possible a color that I like so I do not have to mess with the door jams (should be ok right?). I am going to buy off of www.hokpaint.com, if someone has some free time and could point me in the right direction that would be great here is what I have so far, along with what I am not sure of...

Base Coat- Under the Shimrin mettalics- Glamour Orion Silver (5 qts just to be safe even though door jams are done.
Flakes- One jar of Rainbow Flakes
Reducer- 1 or 2 gal of reducer (But Which one)
Clear Coat- 2 Gal of Clear coat (But which one)
Hardener- 1 Gal of hardener (ditto, lol)

I think that the silver with rainbow flakes is going to look amazing, however I want to make the car look as "wet" as possible as well, is this all in the clear coat? Should I get a sealant to put over the primer on the car? Any other suggestions welcome, I was wondering exactly what pearls do, can it go over paint/flakes? Is it mixed in?

Sorry so many ?s, just want to get this done right. Thanks for your time.

If your painting just the outside of a GN then one gal. of clear is enough. If your going to do the jams and trunk area then you should buy another qt. If your a good painter there wont be alot of orange peal to begin with and there will be plenty of clear on the car to color sand & buff.

You should always use a sealer before spraying your paint. Sence your spraying silver. I would sugjest their silver primer or their white.

You will need to mix the ranbow flakes into some SG-100 to spray over the silver. Two to three qts should be fine. The SG-100 mixes just like the paint 2 to 1. Your not trying to change the color just spray 2 coats over the silver. You wont see much of a change entell you clear the car. Take all three qts of SG-100 and pore them into a gal. contaner. Then pore in your flakes. I wouldn't use the hole contaner enless your looking for alot of sparkle. You might want to do a test spray on an old deck lid first.
The reducer will need to be the right one for the temp and conditions that your spraying in. Get 2 gals.

The clear coat mixes 4 to 1 to 1. That means 4 parts clear 1 part hardner and 1 part reducer. So 2 qts of hardner is enough for 2 gals of clear. As far as what type of clear that is up to you also. Alot depends on your amount of experance and if your useing a booth the weather and so on. You should ask a HOK rep. I could tell you what I use but I'm in Calif and not shure where your from. So I don't know what is used in your area.

The more clear the depper and shiner it will look. Don't put more then 3 coats of clear on at one time. Make shure you do the touch test before spraying on another coat. If you want to make it look really good. Spray the car with 3 coats let dry. Sand the clear with 400 or 500 wet. Be very careful not to go through the clear. Then reaplie anouther 3 coats of clear. Then do your color sanding and buffing.

If your a novice I would caution you about painting silver. Its a tuff paint to spray without tiger stripping it. Make shure you over lap your passes at least by 3/4s. Keep your distance at least 8" away from your work and don't put it on too thick at once. Your going to have to give it at least 3 coats.

I can tell you about many other tips but I need to go to work and make a living. So if you have any more questions I'll try to answer them latter.

Thanks alot drop top. I am not going to be the one painting my car. A family member owns a restoration company, usually they would not charge me much more than paint, but I figured to get the result I really wanted, it would be better to get the paint that I would need to accomplish the result. Everything will be done in a controlled booth, I'll probably call a HOK rep and see what they have to say. Anyways thanks for the advice on everything, hopefully the car will be painted by the end of the year, wanna get all emblems airbrushed on as well. I'll be sure to post pics to show you guys how it all turned out!

So for an average job, one gallon will work, but for a jam up job, by a painter who knows what he's doing, you need at least two gallons of clear.

I wouldnt say for an average job. I'm considerd a very good painter in my area. I have a year wateing list. A good quality clear for even the nicest paint jobs usually only need a gallon. Most cars don't even need a gal. of clear for an average job.. But if your going to color sand and buff a gal is enough. I'm talking about a car that has not been taken apart and it is painted in one peace. In my shop I take all the cars down to nothing and every nut and bolt come off. Most of my cars get more then 1 gallon of clear. because we end up painting more of the car that way. A gallon of good quality clear goes along way. If your using a cheaper clear like Nason or Western. The Yes, you will need more then a gallon of clear. But he is useing House Of Kolor clear and that is a very good quailty clear.
