How much r12 is needed ?

If you do decide to take the car for a shop to do the work, ask what type of vacuum gauge they would be using. A micron gauge is the preferred way to indicate vacuum level. Hooking a vacuum pump up and having both high and low side gauge needles pegged out at 30" of hg does not mean its being evacuated to a micron level. This tool has been in use by better HVAC techs for years, not sure if the automotive techs are using them. Thousands of mobile AC units have been serviced without a micron gauge and they have worked well. With the poor availability and cost of R-12 I would want to know the integrity of the system and that it had been actually dehydrated properly.
Its kind of like measuring the bore of a engine with a tape measure, your can get in the ball park but you really need a better tool.
