How much timing are you guys running ?

Just curious how far some of y'all are straying from the chips default timing.

Mine does not have gear specific adjustability, so timing is 23 degrees in all gears. (TH400)

I thought about adding more timing and more Alky. There's still more room on the dial. :D

Also... a tuning question...

When I mash the pedal and start running thru gears, I'll see maybe a degree or two of knock, then zero as I get up into high gear and Alky is spraying full-on.
My question is, would it benefit me to ramp the Alky in sooner to prevent this early/low gears knock ?

a little over 26 degrees in first and second and 20 in third......

25/24 on the 86

was running 27/23 on the 87

if i get one of those fancy 5.6 tt chips ill bump in a little more 1-2 timing

lots and lots , usually around 27-28
tore the engine down due to a bad lifter (wiped cam) and there was no sign of bearing damage or piston abuse on aa 135k mile motor with over 600 12second and better passes down the 1320 in last two years

I just bumped it up another 2 degrees via the trans+. That should put me at 25 degrees in all gears.

I drove it to work this morning and it feels a little more crisp and a little faster spooling. I put the stock rims & tires back on it last night, so WOT blasts in 1st or 2nd are out of the question for now. :D
I'm 'gonna hafta hang some drag radials on the stock rims soon.

yullose,

I dont mean to hi jack your thread but how do you know when to take away timing or add it is there somthing that you look at on the scanmaster

when boost is as far as i want to go knock free , add timing again till its knock free and watching the 1/8 mph for gains , youll also notice the egts drop with higher timing , you're getting it much closer to the tipover point so use with caution , most will pull the timing back a couple at the high gears , on hot hot days you may need to run just a little less

and only problem i have with throwing more timing 1-2 is it seems to make traction more difficult on marginal tracks ,

once i get off the track and hit the street i usually bring the timing back a few degrees , drop boost a few #s and add a little alky gain for safety

keep in mind the timing you are adding with the TT chip is only there at WOT , so normal driving isnt affected

So far, at WOT in high gear running 27psi I don't see any knock at all.
In 1st/2nd gear I see 1-2 degrees of knock for just a blip, then it goes to zero as I run up thru the gears.
I think it can be cured if I bring the alky in a little sooner, or ramp it to full-on faster.

Not sure yet how to go about it... I still haven't sdjusted anything other than the knob on the dash. ;)

yullose, you can move the ramp slightly say 1130 to 1145 and start trimming back the blue knob.doesn't sound like much but it does change things, and it will fatten things things up a bit,and all across the board.if you start spraying too much to soon your 60 and 330 will suffer.tough to feel when driving but noticable on the timeslip.if the fueling in the chip is on or close than playing with the blue knob slightly in concert with minor adjustments in the ramp will get you what you want, alkycontrol is an awesome system!

I would leave the controls in the box alone (factory)

Complete Ditto

Yeah, I'm a little leary of messing with that box.

I think the small amount of knock could be related to some 1st/2nd gear tire spin.
:D
I think if knock were really a problem you would see it in high gear more and first.

Exactly.

You need to see why its knocking.. sometimes its mechanical, sometimes fuel related. Sometimes its in the chip.. as it goes into power enrichment.

If you need more alky.. high gear will tell you the deal. I ignore transitional knock on the cars.. below 40 MPH.. its a non issue.

I'd hafta say that must be what it is... because when I first mash it and run it up in 1st then to 2nd I'll notice slight knock on the scanmaster but it goes away and stays at zero all the way thru 3rd.
When I mash it in 1st with the sticky tires, it will do a hard, grippy "power-burn" at the top of 1st and partway into 2nd before it grabs solid traction. It seems thats when I'm seeing the 1-2 degrees of knock.

"transitional" is a good way to put it.

Any cure for this ? or is it just something I live with ?

It's the jar, not real knock from what you say; so it's nothing to worry about.:D
PS: but the knock sensor doen't know that tho but some of the chips will disregard knock to a certain point ie mph or rpm.

It's fine to say ignore transitional knock, but timing is being pulled, and thus performance is suffering, is it not?

strike

not on my TT chip its not , most modern chips have knock ignore for launch

if timing is being pulled at shifts it can be adressed by the chip maker , always better to eliminate the shift knock if possible either through tune or by eliminating the external source(s)

I know my combo was different ( stock ), but I ran up to 27* of timing and really no gain from it. Others around me had the same thing at the track.I found my cars nitch at 22,22,21 to net the most power. So, I guess what im saying is find your cars nitch because every car is different. This was all on alky!
