when my transmission went south...my fluid was as black as motor oil that hasn't been changed in 15k miles...i was basically running liquid clutch material through my trans...how do i flush out my trans cooler? i don't want to take it completely out...is there a way via the tranny lines that i can flush this baby out? i don't want any of that crap getting in my new trans...

I wouldn't suggest flushing it.Take your radiator to a shop and have the internal cooler replaced. Those coolers have such small passages it's nearly impossible to get them completely clean.

Tranny shops use a cleaner that comes in an aerosol can, and I think I got some at autozone once.

One other thing be sure to use some 1/4" steel garage door cable and run it thur the cooling lines, with some more of the cooler cleaner. The fiuld can bake in that line and restrict it. And that makes for poor tranny life.

Man.. You are opening can of worms by reusing..

If you are starting with a fresh trans. Both the builder and you will be pretty pissed off if it contaminates your new deal.
See, until you heat it and the new fluid is very high in detergent , you will NEVER get it clean , and it will put the crap it dislodges back into your new trans.
I do not care who you buy a cooler from , just make sure you buy a stacked plate or better cooler and for piece of mind throw the old on away and start fresh. Why risk your new deal over a 100-150.00 part? Seems like a bad gamble to me.
I bet any other trans builder on here would agree...:)

so you are saying to just throw away the old cooler?!

i just put an air hose on the end of one of the tranny lines and flushed all of the fluid out...my tranny cooler is a large front mount with the lines going through the fins in a twisty back and forth from side to side...it doesn't even have a core...it's just one long tranny line with fins surrounding it...it doesn't go into the radiator at all...the feed line is on top "left hand side" and then goes all the way to the bottom and comes out the right bottom side back to the trans...is this acceptable or still get a new cooler?

so what should i do about the tranny lines...replace those too?

Don, I would go with the 8x11 unit in the B&M unit myself. Looks similar to the units we sell but not as thick. The stack plate design works much better than the bent tube models. Remember to run it thru the radiator first though. Mark

i just ordered that plate cooler...only 52 bucks! that's not bad at all...now i feel better knowing i have a much better tranny cooler on my new trans...:D

I just run a pump on the lines with laquer thinner running through the lines and coolers. I finish up by pumping clean trans fluid through the system.

Just to see what it looks like; the last time I just blew air through the lines - then pumped some fluid (it looked clean right a way) -- then pumped some laquer thinner and it was clean.

Of course with that deep PTS pan, things are a good bit cooler.
