Howdy,
A good friend of my brother's and mine knew a guy who had an 87 Regal with some good parts on it. Originally, this guy was gonna use the car for a demolition derby and asked my friend if I would be interested in "swapping" some of the bad parts off my car (front and rear bumpers, tail lights, filler panels, ect.) with some good parts on his car. The deal was that I would come down to the shop where the car was and do the swapping. Well, time went by and I hadn't got around to getting down there.
Fast forward a couple weeks. My friend calls and says the car is still available and that he can have it towed to my house for me to swap the parts at my leisure. When I was done, this guy would pick the car up and it would be a done deal. Normally, I wouldn't be so naive as to let some one just drop a junk car off in my driveway, but my brother and I have known this freind of ours for years and I trust him. I was still skeptical of the transaction and I even told him my concerns about the car being abandoned in my driveway. My friend assured me that it would get picked up.

Well, fast forward again six months later, the car still sits in my driveway and all I get is empty promises from the owner that the car is going to get picked up "This week" or "Bob the tow truck driver is going to call you today". Yet after all this, I'm still stuck with this car and no one knows where the title is. I called around to some local junk yards and the conversations end abruptly when I tell them I have a car with no title. I know our freind had good intentions for this to work out, but the owner of the car is giving us the run around. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?
Mike

pay a wrecker

and tow it to your friend's place and drop it... You may want to check with the local authorities, but you probably can file for a storage lien and obtain a title that way if the junk yards won't take it without a title- you are out time and money- something you would have to take up with your buddy.

Down here in FL I have a metal recycler down the road that accepts cars without titles. You have to file a bill of sale with them and on it you write the VIN and all of your info and they make a copy of your DL. If the car comes up stolen or something else down the road big brother comes after you instead of the yard. The guy who runs it told me that FHP comes around once in a blue moon to check the paperwork but as far as he knows nobody has pawned anything stolen off on him. This yard does a booming business because of all of the junker laws and anybody with a tow truck knows its the place to take those junkers. I find it hard to beleive that FL is the only state that lets the yards operate like this. Have you tried the scrap metal yards? Scrap and salvage are two different things down here. One sells parts and the other doesn't. Maybe you are just looking in the wrong place. I had the same problem disposing of my parts cars until this place opened up.

I didn't try any scap metal yards. We used to be able to junk cars with no title at the local junk yard so long as you put $40 on the dash board. Maybe I should call back some of these yards and ask them about the bill of sale method?

If you got time, just get a sawzall and start cutting it up piece by piece. Drop it off at the scrap yard.

Lol, I already have a huge tree stump that I have to get rid of by cutting it up. I guess I'll just have to start with the car first. Maybe I'll rent a huge dumpster and put them both in it. :p

Contact a local high school. Ask if you can donate it for their student fund. Let all the students take a whack at it for $1.00 a swing and they keep the money. Then the school can dump it.

It does run. I have faith that either Dirty Pete or Don the Tow Truck Driver will come through on this. Our mutual friend has been harassing Dirty Pete, the guy that 'owns' the car, all week. Worst case is we drop it at Dirty Pete's place and leave it. Since no one really owns the car - and it still runs - it could be abandonded in a number of amusing places without fear of it getting traced back to us. I'm thinking a lake or a really fancy restaurant or country club.

Our best lead yet is with the local fire department who will take it for practice drills with the jaws of life.

Still, the bottom line is, no one's gonna want to have anyhting to do with it with no title. I'm not sure if it's even legal for me to posess it.

In Ohio,if you cut the roof off and take it to a metal recycler. It's considered sheet metal and you don't need a title.

They're supposed to come pick it up tommorow. I hope they come through this time.

Just remember the secret phrase. If asked about the title, the answer is "Pete will bring it by later". If it's still there at the end of the day tomorrow we'll make it disappear over the weekend. I've got some ideas.

The car is gone now, ye of little faith. A disgruntled flatbed driver picked it up on Friday. When asked, Mike just had to give the secret phrase: "Dirty Pete has the title."

Lol. It looked like he was having trouble getting around the side of my house so I motioned for him to back up. Apparently that's the most presumtuous, condescending, arrogant and ignorant gesture that you can give a tow truck driver. He got out and said, "It's not my first day ya know, Iv'e been doing this for two weeks".
