How to tell what stall converter?

Somewhat a stupid newbie question. :redface:

I don't know what convertor I have in my car. Stock or else :confused: I bought the car with in and always ran fine.

How can I tell without removing it?

Mine work just fine, but it always bug me to know what it could be....

For the typical street/strip application, the easiest way to check torque converter stall, as TCI® rates it, is by “flash stall”. This can be measured by pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor (full throttle) when the vehicle is in high gear at the lowest speed before it downshifts, and watching the tachometer. The rpm to which it instantly “jumps” is a pretty accurate measurement of the stall rpm of the torque converter. This method works even better if you have a full manual shift transmission.

The second way to measure flash stall in a street/strip vehicle is to floor the throttle from a dead stop off of idle. Look at the tachometer and whatever the rpm jumps to when the car starts to move is the stall rpm. If the cam is too big for the converter or if the rear end gear is too low, it will dramatically affect the stall rpm by decreasing it. In other words, a car with a 3.73 gear will flash stall a converter at a higher rpm than an identical car with a 4.10 gear.
 
I know jack about transmissions, and trying to learn. :eek:
I was told to check rpm with the foot on the brake pedal at 0/0 and 5 psi on these cars. This will be true test on these cars, according to the experts. What do you think?
 
To measure actual stall speed you need to be (1) starting from a dead stop (D1) (2) Foot on the brake HARD ( you dont want the back tires to spin, if they do spin the test will not be accurate and you have to start over), I suggest maybe tightening the back shoes a little (3) Mash your foot into the gas...........your engine will go to a certain RPM and stay there and thats your stall speed. Disclaimer **Do not do this for more than 5 seconds at a time**


Also if you trans is tired (shot:rolleyes:) you may see higher stall speeds, but that can be your clutch pack slipping :eek:.
