Im looking at getting a "new" car but I just looked up the MPG and it gets 12 MPG in the city and 20MPG on the highway. Anyone here have about this same MPG with their cars using premium fuel? How bad is it really as a daily driver and even on long trips (trips over 100 miles one way). This will probably be my new daily driver and we might use it to go out of town but I want to make sure the MPG isnt ridiculously low. Thanks for your input!

I drive mine daily and I have to be honest with you...I've yet to see anything close to that mysterious 20mpg actually happen...

On average I see anywhere between 200-225 miles on 3/4 tank of gas.

...and if you're as undisciplined as I am with the gas peddle....you'll be at the gas station every 2-3 days to put 3/4 tank ($35-$40) back in....

So if your budget says you need a commuter that will give you good mileage....you need to look at something else.

50% of mileage is controlled by the right foot

All my cars get $hitty mileage

Yeah, I just looked online and supposedly the S65 and the S55 get the same gas mileage on the freeway (20MPG) and on the city they differ by 1MPG, 12 for the S65 and 13 for the S55. I guess Ill be going with the S65 and take it easy..... (yeah right) but I was thinking 12-20MPG was like horrible so I guess its not too bad.

If you're looking for gas mileage buy a Prius. If you're looking to have some fun keep the GN. Who is going to give a thumb's up to a guy driving a hybrid except maybe Al Gore? ;) The GN is a different story. As stated above gas mileage is inversely proportional to the weight of your right foot. :) My GTO gets crappy mileage too if it's any concelation.

I consistently average well over 20 mpg even with my combo.

I'm not calling BS, so please don't take this the wrong way....but...I just don't see how it's possible to get better than the factory published mileage numbers on a modified combo that has waaaaaay higher fuel demands.

Serious question: What do you think your secret is? I'd love to know cuz I want to get hat kind of mileage out of my GN.

Well the car Im thinking about has twice as many cylinders and twice as many turbos as the GN  .... so it was either that or the baby brother S55, a Supercharged V8..... but the 65 wins hands down so thats what Im looking at now............ plus I LOVE the way it sounds when you start it!

I'm not going to claim to be an expert here, because I certainly haven't found the touch with my own cars. But like many have said, your right foot plays heavily on mileage. In the episode of Top Gear where Clarkson raced a Veyron against the others in a plane, he mentioned that if the car were run at WOT, the fuel tank would be emptied in 12 minutes. Modified turbo cars only require more fuel when in boost. A very well tuned engine can and often will exceed factory both in performance and in economy. Case in point: My friend has a 1991 Spirit R/T. Digging online, Allpar.com says EPA estimates for that car were 22/29. Ray's car is fairly well modified, with a best of 8.33 in the 1/8 mile on slicks, and he regularly gets 30-31mpg on the highway.

My Shelby Charger is significantly more aerodynamic, weighs nearly 1000lbs less, and gets exactly the same mileage. I believe my best 1/8 mile time was an 8.73 on street tires, so I've got a long way to go before I catch him. Quick online search, I was only able to find actual city mileage in a Popular Mechanics article showing 19mpg, so I'm still in the ball park.

Then there's my Daytona which is 100% stock except for exhaust and a K&N filter, and I can't break 25.6 on the highway no matter what I do. If anyone remembers back to when Daytonas debuted in the IROC racing series, they found that the bodies were "notably" more aerodynamic than the Camaros they replaced.

Just my 2 cents.

I can provide witnesses! Before my current combo, with 36 lb injectors and a TE34 turbo we got 30mpg driving to the GS Nationals from Chicago! It was raining so we had to stay at 65 but we also had 2 guys in the car, tools and slicks in the truck and luggage in the back seat.

My car has always run great, as anyone in the Chicago chapter can attest to. If you car is in super fine tune, and you have an efficient intake and exhaust along with a lockup convertor, you should easily get 20 mph UNLESS you are flooring the car constantly! My 20 mpg includes "getting on it" every so often. I do not live in the city so I have no bumper to bumper driving in my mix. I bought my car new and the window sticker states 25 mpg highway.

Try to improve the rolling of your car. JAck up the front and spin a wheel. Does it spin freely for a minute or so? If not, maybe your pads are in contact with your rotor causing drag. Things like paying attention to little details like that, along with tuning so you idle and cruise at the proper AF ratio can be of help.

Good luck in straightening out your cars issues. Paul

I'm going to keep track of my mileage for a few tanks and post up the results in a couple weeks....you guys are gonna freak out at the rate that I consume fuel...
:D
I'll do my best to behave...tee hee:biggrin:... so that I get as good a numbers as I can.

I think the only thing that will help your MPG is unbolting your gas pedal from the floor board:p

High stall convertor, Bigger injectors, jacked up fuel pressure, roller cam, bigger turbo, frequent kill section attendee & recent ticket for going 30 over posted speed limit & meanchicken is now going to check his fuel mileage. Now that's very funny !

Highway Lean Cruise Mode - extender chips, turbo tweak, and a few other have this mode.

with 120s and E85 ,and my right foot I can see the fuel gauge drop:eek: But it's tons of fun!

my 1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona 500 Edition with the stock Crossfire Injection 305ci V8 gets 25-30 MPG

ME-R here with 83#'s and I get 25mpg on the dot on the highway. O2's just barely tickly the .730 mark. Pyrometer stays low without boost. In town is another thing. I can go thru a full tank in less than a week just driving the car for 3 days and it is 6.9 miles one way to work. :D

my Z06 gets 26-29 MPG highway & 14-16 city, my Ford lightning gets 15 highway & 10 city, Wife's Lexus Hybrid 24 highway & 18 city ( what a joke ) A stock grand national is supposed to get 16-23 that is unless mean chicken is working the controls.
