hey guys does anyone know a trick to mod a four speed shifter to a three speed because im going with a TH400 instead of a 200R4 and i want to keep my rods working right thanks

My suggestion would be to sell yours and buy a 3 speed set. You can get a 3 speed cheaper from what I've seen. I'm putting my L rods on soon.

I second that, either put them up for later or sell them and buy the right ones. They have went thur the roof lately on ebay for a 4 speed auto. I have them in my car right now and love the look, fuction nice to lol. Daniel Ray

Really nice to have at the track.

Is that a stock Olds plate cover bolted on? If not, I was wondering where I could get the "thread" "hairs" and rubber that fills in the gaps around the shifter rods.

BTW, I bought mine more for decoration and nostalgia than anything, but it actually helps you at the track? I didn't know a lot of people manually shift.

Mine look like the ones below...

Nope, mine look better. :) THough that's the only pic I had on this computer. I'll get some pics up of the new plate from Mark Huffman.

Hurst Lightning Rods for GNs

Those Lightning Rods are AWSOME!...I have always loved the way they looked in the Hurst/Olds.Do the make them to fit an 87 Gn? Do they make them for a 200R4.What mods need to be done to make them look Factory?...And how much do they cost?
Any help would be appreciated.Dave

there real easy to install if you have all the parts that come with them it just bolts right in and the custom buick parts sells the plate for the console top but you have to have a 4 speed one for the 200R4

I may be a little dense but can you guys explain how the shifter works? Do you put the main rod in drive and use the 1 and 2 to shift between gears?

Sorry for the stupid question.

4-speed version: Rod one (next to driver) controls Park, N, R, OD, D. Rod two (mid) controls second gear, Rod 3 controls first gear.

3-speed version: Rod one controls Park, R, OD. Rod two controls third gear, Rod 3 controls second gear. This is the one I now have in my 87.

The cable is basically the same as the stocker.

Thanks for the answer but how do you shift the rods? Do you leave the large rod in D and then shift the 1-2 with the separate rods? Don't mean to be stupid.

Sequence:

Rod one in D, Rod (mid) two is pulled back as far as it will go (1-click), Rod three is pulled back as far as it will go (1-click), the trans is in LOW, shift rod three forward (1-click) trans is in second, shift rod two forward trans is in third (drive).

.........................................OR....................................................

All rods back as far as they will go, trans is in LOW, push rod 3 forward trans is in SECOND, push rod 2 forward trans is in THIRD.

Clear as mud huh!

Mr Gasket no longer sells them (or rebuild parts for them) and when I spoke to them last year, they had no plans to in the future. You'll have to find a set from a Hurst Olds (eBay) and be prepared to pay big $$. I've seen incomplete sets go for $350 and full sets with and without the console go for over $1000. The shifter cable and the shifter cable bracket are specific to the LR's as well. There's some good info out there. Search here or over on Oldspower.com.
