I am looking at buying a 1984 GN, but.......

I don't know anything about them :confused:

I am a mustang guy at heart, so I really don't know much about GN's at all.

Today I was driving around town looking to buy a Foxbody to turn it into a street demon of a machine :D

Until I came across this 1984 GN sitting in a used car lot. It was an auto, 136,000 miles, the body was in very nice condition, interior was very worn down, and they wanted $4,995 for it.

I talked them down to $3,600 but I don't know anything about the car.

I talked to some mustang friends of mine and they say get it while its still there. After college, I will head over to the car lot and take it for a test drive.

What should I expect?

Is it worth $3,600?

If I sell it down the road do you think I will get my money back?

I know for a fact that GN's are very sought after cars and usually cost around $15,000 just to get one in good condition.

What should I do?
 
I personally would only pay $2500-$3000 for a 84 or 85 turbo Regal and it would have to be in good shape. The expensive turbo Buicks are the 86-87. I own a 87 turbo Buick and a 89 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. Both are great cars to modify.:D
 
If you really want a turbo regal then get an 86 or 87. These were the two years they were intercooled which added 40 HP.
 
It will be a big project. These are unique cars that require a considerable commitment. You should hang around this board for a while and learn before you jump into one
 
Find an 86 or 87. Your going to have to spend much more on a non intercooled car just to keep up with a slightly modded 86-87.
 
Depend on what you're looking for.

If you only care about going fast, without a doubt buy an intercooled one.

There were around 20,000 GN's made in '87, but only 2,000 made in '84, so if you want something that is VERY rare and are willing to sacrifice some performance to have something rare, I'd go with the '84 hands down.

Also the '84 was second year of GN's, the first year that they were black, first year for fuel injection, and the first year for all of them to be turbocharged. The also have the VERY rare lear siegler leather interior.

I know I'm a little biased!;) But thats my perspective
 
3600 is alot for any car with 136,000 and a ratty interior..

i like my 84, right now with very very minor basic mods its running mid 13s just like alot of 86/87 guys...

however, it took alot more care to get it there... the 84/85 cars are harder to work on and full of quirks that can keep you in the mid 14s forever if you dont know what youre doing..

so considering you dont know alot about these cars, go with an ic'ed one, theyre alot easier to go fast in

but if you really care about rarity... figure the ~2000 84 gn's made... probably less than 1500 of them are left, and when it comes to the 84 T-types id bet less than 1500 of them are left, just because not alot of people know that a t-type is a buick turbo car too.
 
Yep, 84 and 85 cars are much rarer than the 20K some 87s, and even the 5K plus 86 GNs. the Ttypes, are rarer than the GNs in most cases, and i would imagine that this fact will become known in a few years and their prices will increase a fair amount due to the rarity. 98% of all GNs ive seen are 86 87 cars. If you want the performance of a 86 or 87, you can do like my car is setup, and go with the 87 engine in the 84 body.
 
I paid $3k for mine, 100k miles, bad paint, great body, good interior, sub-par engine. Hot airs are slower and it takes more mods to make em fast, but i really enjoy having such a rare GN. At the car shows in my area there were about a dozen or so TR's. And mine was the only Hot Air...kind of cool.

I'd have the GN you're looking at checked out by someone. Sounds like the place is tryin to screw you. 136k miles and a bad interior doesnt sound like a good price unless the exterior is really nice and it runs well. But I give thumbs up to it anyway.;)

thats something i really liked about my car when i found it and restored it...

as far as I know, NO ONE else has a car like mine... i can be pretty sure that no one in the entire world has an 84 T-type with no hood ornaments, no emblems or wheel well trim, gunmetal gta wheels, and a 86/87 GN color pattern lear siegler leather interior. no one else has it, or anything close to it.

thats why i dont think i could ever have a fox mustang or an LS1.. theyre nice cars and im sure i would LOVE the ls1 but.. it would be so hard to be unique! I had a rental mustang for a month and all i saw when i drove it were other v6 mustangs, i couldnt stand driving something that SO MANY other people have..

oh yea, i also like making the IC guys scratch their heads when they see my car runs pretty good.. and then tell them its a hotair ;)
 
I paid 2500 for my 85 that was with 200miles on a rebuilt trans, and 50,00 on the engine. That's alot of miles your first mod would be to pull the engine and rebuild it. I would give him 1500 hundred for it. Those corner car lot's always want to much money for their junk. The hotair buicks can go fast if you got money.

On the positive side the 84 doesnt have the PowerMonster brake system like the 85-7 did.;)
 
I like the performance of the 86 and 87 turbo regals but also like you hot air guys like having something fairly rare. That's why I chose an 86 designer series T of which 463 were made.

I like GS70350's idea. Buy it and put an 86 or 87 intercooled motor in it.
