I was giving a friend a ride in the car when I step on it part throttle the car downsifts and starts stumbling. all the rpms then hit the red line, so I ease of the gas and try it again and it happens again. I give him a lift to his house then he follows me in his ricer to mine. I decided to give it wot to see if it would happen it did. My friend says he saw black puffs of smoke out of the exhaust while the car stumbled and all the rpms are maxed out. It's like it didnt want to shift. I got home and let it cool off. Wife tell's me i need to get something at the grocery store so i take the car. It feels like it's slipping the engine or tranny i mean doesnt feel tight and it's losing power big time. I dont think i can hang in there much longer. I have no Idea what the problem could be. My wife says that we cant afford to have our only car in the shop for weeks. Can someone give me some options?

Sounds like the tranny has a problem, check the fluid level and see if it smells burnt. Could be the converter also. I would drop the pan and look for metal shavings

Dont know about the black smoke and stumbling, looks like your car is out of tune, maybe has a bad sensor also. Need scan tool info for a better diagnosis

Ses light on?? I would give the maf the ol tap test, or swap with known good one if possible. Also check for codes with a paperclip. Good luck!

we definitely need some more info to be able to give a hand. On the engine I mean

With the limited info avail., I would second the motion on the MAF. When I had my 1st Grand National only a short time, this happened to me, and I thought the car was toast. The maf fails suddenly, without any notice, and the car just runs like s#%@! You can try unplugging the maf altogether and see if the car runs a little better w/o it. If it's only the maf, then no biggie. You'll be back and running in no time. Check the archives on "MAF" and you'll find lots of ideas: Autozone for $65 rebuilt (some hate them, some love them); or Ramchargers for the MAF Translator/Plus for the deluxe solution.

Maf is brand new reads 255@wot but just for s**t and giggles I will try the old maf which also worked fine. no mal code and my scanmaster is right on except for the low blm's mostly 90-110 at idle then 128 @ wot. Everything else is on according to my scanmaster.

You have a 233 reg with 009's and a TE44???????

Bad Boy!

Get an adj on there now. I bet your are way high on FP

Rick Harper of Harper's racinhg rebuit my engine said that he would leave the stock on so that the seal would seat properly and the pressure wouldn't increase or decrease.

I disagree strongly. I had a 237 regulator on mine, better than a 233, and when I hotwired my pump it could only hold the pressure back to 49psi:eek:

You need to get a gauge on there asap to see what its running. Everyone on here usually run Accufabs or something similar because the stockers cannot hold consistent pressure, and the ability to adjust FP is a must

Ok tomorrow when i take the car to the tranny shop I will ask them if the have a fuel pressure gauge that i can borrow.

I got the hp pump from poston about two years ago and i got a walbro 340 in the closet just dont want to put it on without fixing the cars problems first.

Okay can too much fuel , because of the stock regulator not keeping pressure can my car to not to shift and a gradual loss of power because of flooding the engine with to much gas? My wife says not likely and I'm in agreement with her but then again these are very problematic cars?

No it probably has nothing to do with your tranny problem, but it has everything to do with the smog cloud you are leaving behind when you punch the gas. And too much FP can wash down the oil on the cylinder walls and send you in for a rebuild in no time

Go to gnttype.org and follow the instructions for the TV cable adjustment procedure. that is an easy fix if thats your problem
