I'm contemplating taking the plunge and buying a set of postons headers, a crossover, one of mease's 3" downpipes, and a dual 3" system with no mufflers from torque tech. Is anyone running anything similar? Wonder what results I might expect. Think I'm gonna go ahead and run a cat to be safe. I am so out of control :p

i have the 3" TT cat back w/ 2 chamber flows and a 3" zero to sixty dump pipe and a 2.5" crossover and a mease 3" dump pipe w/o the cat.....the TT 3" exhaust is a nice piece i love mine....the 3" downpipe w/ headers and crossover will hugely increase power and spool up, i do not have the headers but I hear they make a HUGE difference...I wish i could have kept my cat and put a cutout right before it but i can live w/o it:cool: Anyways Go for it....probably end up costing you like $1500 tho.....now all you need is a TE33, injectors, and chip and youll be pusing 12's

Sounds like you will be set well into the 9s exhaust wise. Spoolup should be awesome. You will probably be ok with no mufflers and stock turbo, with a system like yours you might change your mind once you upgrade the turbo. Mine sounded great with no mufflers. Then I upgraded to a TA62 and my car sounded more like a rice car, lost a lot of the throaty sound so I put the mufflers back on.

I just saw you plan on running a cat. That will keep the sound level down for sure but why run something so restrictive on such a nice exhaust system? If you're worried, run a nice gutted 3" cat.

We have inspections here...........but only a sniffer, only visual inspection is for vented gas cap. Will one of our cars pass without a cat? I am 99% sure my car has a brand new longblock in it and a new turbo. Just found a 86/7 ECM and ign. module in the junkyard. Also purchased a thrasher 92 chip. What could I expect from this combo with proper tuning?

There's very little chance of the car passing without a cat. Do they test for NOx where you live? If not, you have a better chance but still a very small chance. The cat is the single most restrictive exhaust component and should be one of the first things to go. You can run a test pipe and bolt the cat on when you go to smog.

It has begun. Welcome to the spending $$ club.
Try to register your car in a non emmission testing area. There is no way in h*ll it will pass without a cat. So if you get it registered with no emissions testing. Pull the friggin cat off of the there and run a straight through muffler. You can also elminate the EGR system to.

Oh it started a long time ago :p Bought this car to use as a cheap driver. Have a 71 chevelle SS conv. that has been apart forever.......had 90% of everything to put it back together...... guess sitting a little longer won't hurt........money has to go somewhere I guess . Wish I had a relative out of testing area :(

Well I dont know about IL. But in WI you can register it to your address and there is a line on the form that says. Vehicle kept in county of --. Just pick one that doesnt have it. Abra cadabra loop hole. You would have to let your registratioin expire and reregister. Hope this helps.

Well as of right now my registration on the car is suspended because I couldn't get it back together in the time frame they gave me to have it inspected. Sucks that I am going to have to illegally drive the car to get it ot the point it will pass emmissions but so be it. Car was barely running when I bought it and it has been one thing after another. I will have to look into that, not sure if I have or had that option. Thanks!!

emissions

don't worry it will pass without a cat. I'm a certified emission inspector in one of the strictess cities other than california and we test for nox also my t type passed with flying colors. here are my mods ta60, poston headers, atr up & down pipes, lunati 200 cam, 42lb injectors, adjustable fuel regulator, and fuel pump w/ hot wire kit. if your cars running good just turn the fuel pressure up about 2-4lbs and that will keep the nox in check.

Well then what happens to HC and CO???

That's right. It's a balancing act, lower one and you raise the other. My car failed a few times and once I replaced the defective cat it was one of the cleanest I've ever seen. HC was nearly 0. Without the cat it didn't come that close. The reason I even suggested to try without the cat is if he doesn't have the NOx testing, he could lean it out a lot and see if the HCs come down enough. Not likely though.

Emission Test

Ok just dug out my result from the smog test on my T Type.

No way in Jersey

Your car would fail misserably if you were in jersey wtih out a cat. I tried getting my car through with the cat, and I failed because my car was running too rich...to much gas in the exhaust. I would do what everyone else says, tkae it to inspection witht he cat on, and go home, take the cat off, put it in a box for next inspection...good luck, let me know the final costs for that exhaust system. I already have to poston headers, and they are really great, but I have th original cat back system...Good luck again!
