I currently have a overbuilt combo. The turbo I have is too big (for street). I have a TE-63-1. I do have the right converter (3300+ stall), and enough fuel (72's and 2 307's). But the turbo doesn't kick in till mid rpms.

I got a ride in another GN with a TE-50 turbo. I just love the low end/mid-range pull.

Will a Te-50 (52?54?) provide a quicker (than a Te-63) spool and still run 10.90's?

Thanks

If you want a turbo that has better street manners (quicker spool and more low/mid range pull) that will work well with that 3300+ stall converter and be able to run 10.90's I would get a TE-61 turbo from John Craig. The PTE53 turbo which is about the same size and offers about the same performance as the 61 would also spool up better and still be able to 10.90's and match up very well with your combo. BTW, you'd have to push the TE-50 pretty hard to run 10.90's and the TE-61 and PTE53 should spool up just as quick with the converter you have, but also remember that if you have a chip that is rich on the low end this will make just about any turbo feel laggy, so I'd see if the chip is the cause of the problem before getting rid of the TE-63-1. Hope that helps:)

I'm not so sure I would give up on your turbo just yet. I have a T63E-1 (9" Art Carr 3200 stall) and I think it is just fine. Mine does not spool very quick b/c I have severe exhaust leaks currently, but when it hits 5#'s of boost it will put in back in the seat. I also agree with 86Brick that if you run those 72's you are probably gonna be fat on the low side of the rpm's until you get going. With all that having been said, I would check to make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks (header cracks), check your fuel distribution (chip or whatever), and what size exhaust housing are you running on the turbo.? I would try these things first before I'd go spend $700 for another turbo. HTH.

I have a PI 10.5 NLU converter. No exhaust leaks. Chip is a MaxEffort (the best). Maybe it's the 10.5 vs 9" converter(?)

I had a TA-54 turbo with the .85 housing and with a 9" 3500 stall n/l it would spool quick and there was so much low end power I couldnt go to WOT till about 45mph and I'd still spin.

With one chip it was really bad on the bottom end. didn't spool quick, felt laggy. With a different chip it was like night and day.

I'm not saying the ME is not a good chip, but you might want to try it with a different chip instead of downgrading your turbo.

Mine takes about 1/2 sec to go to 5psi but from 5 to 18 is like right now!:D a smaller turbo would be better for the street at my whimpy boost levels:(

I had a T63E on my old motor and AC 9" 3200 and it didn't feel 100% streetable to me. After discussing and searching things over I picked up a TE-61 with PTE .63 housing. I hope to do the same and be 100% in check. Do a search on the TE-61 and see what you find.
