I just put my car back together with a new cam and I got a code 42 :(

All grounds were just cleaned and put back on.
Non-GM coil pack and ingnition module have been used for the most part I have had the car with no problems (minus some other issues) and I have never gotten a code 42. I swapped back to the original GM stuff and the code is gone, but I get a miss very often. The check engine light flashes on that instant for the miss and then its gone? No codes are being kept as I am monitoring with the scanmaster.

I am trying to find someone close with a coil/ignition tester...

Is the coil pack/ignition module and strong possibility?

I recently installed a Translator + before the cam swap and didn't get a code 42 or the miss and CE light, I took my time installing it, but haven't rechecked the wiring since.

I am not real sure where to start looking, I want to start driving her again:(

TIA

Ron

One more thing...

The braided ground strap from the firewall is currently going to a stud in the intake... Did I misplace that and is it supposed to go to the coil pack bracket? I don't remember taking the bracket off?

TIA

Ron

Hey Ron, if you find out what's causing the code 42 please let me know. I've been chasing this problem for 6 months. My coil pack and ignition module checked out fine with Casper's tester. Thanks, R.B.

I just checked a few things, checked the chip and receiver in the computer and cleaned the pins with some cleaner, added a ground to the coil pack bracket to the fire wall and cleaned the crank sensor plug with electronics cleaner and fired her up.
The miss was still there, can't figure out why or when, just kind of happens, either at idle or different rpms.
So I was playing with the rpms trying to see if there was any corelation and noticed some smoking from the engine compartment, and the headers were glowing, both sides!

I am not sure what I got myself into this time:(

Any help or direction would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Ron

Hey guys, it was the Trans + setting code 42's on my car. Found this to be the case after replacing module, coil, trying my spare computer, replacing the timing wire to the computer, sheilding the timing wire from the Trans (per Bob). To ck this out, just jumper around the timing lead from the Trans. On my car, it was retarding the timing and ran horribly. This was the subject of a couple of threads a few months ago. Might want to search on it. Please let us know when you find your problem. HTH

When mine was spitting the Code 42, it was the computer.

I had to do everything else first before I believed it, but it was the computer.
If you can finds a spare ECM, swap it in. If not... see if you ever get any other codes. If I remember correctly, when it spit out the code for water injection, I knew it was the computer.

I am not sure what actually cause it to go, but nothign was burnt or anything, just wasn't working properly.

Thanks guys,
I am about to pull the lt1 maf and the trans+ and put my old stuff back in, we'll see if that helps anything.
Also, I am meeting up with someone on Saturday to test a known good computer.

John,
Can you elaborate on the timing wire issue? How do I jumper around the timing wire?

Thanks.
Ron

where you spliced into the computer's timing wire with the Trans timing wires, just disconnect the Trans, and either reconnect or jumper the two ends of the computer's timing wire back together.

Thanks John,
I found the jumper that came with the kit...

I tried it and it seemed to clear things up, but I may have found something, not sure?

I was under the car again and poking and feeling and found one strand from the battery to the starter hanging out.

Is it possible that this strand was touching the frame or anything else and messing with the electrical system? I sure hope so.
I haven't fired her up to see, I am nervous and don't want to worry about it tonight:)

Thanks!
Ron
