...to size a turbo to an engine setup so hardware can be minimized. I'd like to turbo an LS-1 and keep it simple enough so there's nothing but a turbo, yet not have any runaway boost problems. No wastegate, blow-off, etc. Can it be done?

TIA!

I really don't think it would be smart. It would be a tuning nightmare, it would have poor low end power, you'd have nothing but headaches. The other problem you'd have is where would all the pressure go when you let off the gas? The intake would close but the turbo would still be pushing air.

The more I think about it the more problems I'm coming up with. You need a wastegate, a blow off valve or both. Really.

They used to sizr turbos that way many moons ago.... just up the exhaust housing size until the motor couldn't turn the turbo any faster to make any more boost. IMHO that is crazy to do it that way today. Yes it is more simple... but you are leaving mucho spoolup on the table... todays internal wastegates are simple enough... (with an LS1) .....get a properly sized turbo... with a properly sized exhaust housing and it will put an extra large  on your face.

Can it be done? Probably. You're looking at a significant headache matching up stuff like everyone has mentioned. No wastegate? Enjoy a nightmare sizing the turbo both compressor and turbine. No BOV? Not the biggest deal, just be aware you're significantly shortening the life of the turbo.

OK, forget that idea...would have been much cleaner but too inefficient.
