Summit heater install
Here we go, heat and defrost is easy to achieve.
First you have to remove your stock A/C and heater box.
Install a delete pulley and delete plate (I fabricated my own which was also easy). I decided to go with Summit SUM-991101 These Summit® automotive heaters are designed to replace that worn-out heater. They use your engine's existing coolant to provide big heat, and they have a 3-speed fan for high, medium, and low settings. The included instructions and wiring make installation simple. The heater is the perfect size to fit behind the glove box.
When you removed your stock A/C, heater you should remove your vent tubing going to your vents specifically the defrost. Place the heater in a location of your choice. Mark the 4 holes to secure it to the delete plate you installed.
You can bolt it into place or use rivets. Next you will notice 4 wires attached to the heater.
I wanted to use my stock switch so I used my multi meter and went through each setting and this is what I learned.
Heater wires Car wires
Yellow is low speed Green is low speed
Red is med speed Brown is med speed
Orange is high speed Orange is high speed
Black is ground
So I cut the wire harness on the car after the factory connection.
I placed shrink tubing on all wires, insuring it's well up the wire.
Solider the wires together as indicated above then pull the shrink tubing over the exposed wires and using a lighter melt the tubing.
Place the black wire to a good ground, I used a screw in the frame of the dash behind the glove box it's a good ground.
You will notice you will have two extra wires left on the stock wire harness. I put a multi meter on both and noticed they are both live 12 Volts, so I cut small shrink tubing and placed them over the ends. I may need a 12-volt source in the future.
I purchased Prestone 5/8 Heater hose and two grommet with 4 new hose clamps.
Mark the location you want your two hoses to enter your delete plate and using a cutting tool, cut your two holes ensuring you cut it big enough for the rubber grommets.
Connect the lines and you’re in business.
Now I like things to be neat so I measured the distance in the glove box to the heater and noticed that if I cut the plastic insert and remove one inch I can still have a glove box.
Removing glove box insert remove the screws and then you will notice that the lock must be removed. It's easy but took me sometime to figure it out. First open glove box then lock it, insert a finishing nail or a thin allen key into the slot on the inside cover. Push gently and at the same time pull the lock out. One click at a time. It will come out a little and then you will have to push the next tab in, pull it out a little and push the next tab in, until it's out.
I marked a line around the glove box and cut it into two.
Then I marked a line 1 inch down and cut the 1-inch out and using good glue put it together
Then reinstall it on the door put the lock back on and your done.
Photo's will be put up tonight or tomorrow.
