installing a VDO tach

is it true that a VDO TACH willnot work on a tr without some kind
of adaptor? if so what is it and how do you install it?

Courtesy of Jim from a recent discussion...

The VDO tach's need the 5 volt square wave mod done to them for them to work on our cars...VDO USED to do this mod for free, but I've heard they don't any more...

Call up John Spina @ Casper's Electronics...They have an plug-in adapter that goes between the gauge and the tach signal wire to correct the signal so that it would work...

Here's a description from their website...

102007 VDO Tach Signal
Converter Module

This in-line converter is
designed to accept the CCCI
tach signal from the GM
module, and amplify it to allow
proper operation of VDO and
other aftermarket tachometers.
Three wires in, three wires out.
The output of the unit plugs

TACH signal (white wire) from
the CCCI module.

Why is it I installed my VDO tach using the lead from ign module direct to tach and it is working fine, no mods required?
I bought mine about 3 years ago. Is there something I am missing?

paul where did you get your tach from (tr catolog) maybe the mod
was done already by vdo

Some of the vendors had purchased the VDO tachs already modded to work on our ign systems...If you bought it from a TR vendor, chances are it was already done...

Seems that the problem generally is only with VDO tachs...The other brands don't seem to have that problem...

It wasn't a turbo vendor (sorry), I think it was from Racer Wholsale.
