if it doesn't look all the way in its not. the converter should be so far back into the trans you can't see the shinney part of the neck of the converter. spin the tail shaft some while spining the converter clockwise and it will go. trust me you will know when it goes on.
3 clunks. Had a hard time getting mine to go the 3rd one and ended up putting the trans on end and the converter went right in. Of course this was done with a newly rebuilt trans that had no fluid in it. Worked for me.

and push it back , once on the engine push it back again and measure the distance from the flywheel , if its over 3/16" from mounting tabs to flywheel add shims to bring it under 3/16" , you want at least 1/8" pull out from trans but not more than 3/16"
and dont use the bolts to pull the trans onto the block , if it wont go figure out why , sometimes the converter pilot wont fit the crank and needs some sanding off of paint , not saying that dusty's are that way but its something to look out for, also a little dab of oil on the alignment dowels
