so I ordered a new te-44 turbo and fedex says its going to be delivered tomorrow. That means ill be installing it this weekend and i cant wait!! ive had my car for almost 4 years now and have always had the stock turbo so im pretty excited. i know its nothing too crazy but i thought for the price and seeing as how my car is almost 100% street driven it was the way to go. The install doesnt look like itll be difficult at all. i ordered the oil drain gasket and turbo to header gasket and also a new hd actuator. anything else ill need that i forgot?? any tips to make the install go quicker?? also do i need to get my chip reflashed with the new turbo?? thats all the questions i have for now. im going to be tweaking/tuning myself so im sure ill have plenty more questions coming haha. thanks for your time guys.

Nick

INstall should be a cinch. First thing you can do is throw the turbo to header gasket away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It'll cause nothing but trouble in the future. Remove your stock turbo and you'll see there is NONE there. There's a reason.

The HD actuator might cause you some issues with high boost that you don't want. Depending on what spring it was manufactured with.

well i run 100 octane in the car at all times n i also use an RJC boost controller to control the boost level. hopefully i wont have too hard of a time. anything i can do to prevent having high boost issues?? also what do youby high boost issues becuase once i get my new intercooler i planon running it at 20-22 pounds anyways. thanks again,

Nick

did you order an actuator setup for a TE series turbo ,
the stock TA style will not work as is , it will need an adapter or some drilling and welding

and if the stock turbo is bone stock including the downpipe and has never been off you might find a couple of the bolts may not want to let go from the exhaust elbow ,
running the turbo for a couple minutes (dont try hot after a drive) will help but they still might snap a couple so plan on getting some m8 x`1.25 bolts and use antisieze on them
the DP to elbow bolts need to come off to get at the lower bolt so plan on using some heat and some liquid nut buster

thanks for the article dabigguy, lots of good info in their however i was hoping once i got a new intercooler (not sure if i want stock location or front mount) and alky injection id be able to rip off some 11 sec passes. like i said i only run 100 octane in the car so i think the 100 octane and alky together will make for some nasty 1/4 mile times. thanks for all the input guys!!

yes its for a te turbo. will i notice a difference in sotp with this turbo compared with the stocker???

what converter ?
if its stock D5 the seat of pant feel will be less with the te44 vs stock
spoolup will be slower
also dont forget the chip , if its for stock you'll need to add more fuel

A bigger SLIC is all you need, not a front mount. With proper tuning and the 100 octane 23lbs should be fine.

pacecarta, stock converter for now, that and intercooler are next on the upgrade list. I dont have a stock chip but i do have a Turbo Tweakchip tined for 93 if thats what you mean. how do i add fuel like you stated?? does it have to be done on the chip or can i do it using the Maftpro gen II?? havnt really ever messed with any of that stuff the car ran amazing with the base tune so ijust left it alone for a while.

cant do with the maft , has to be done with the chip

you can add fuel with the tT chip ,

newer chips (5.6 -6.0) use the throttle pedal and you can watch the changes you make on a scan tool , scanmaster, powerlogger, directscan , turbolink
older chips 5.5 and lower use the ac controller and unplugging the iat sensor

figure out what version it is and go to turbotweak.com forums and download the instructs

by stock i meant for stock turbo, id add 15% WOT and see where that gets you by watching the o2s at WOT as you work the boost up , always watching for any sign of KR

btw if you're running 100 octane with a 93 chip on its base timing (19/17) you've been wasting a lot of octane for nothing , with the tt chip you can also add timing

X100 on this one!

ok so 24 for first and then 22for the rest?? how much fuel do you think i should add and in what gear?? thanks for answering all my questions again!!

Nick

yes see post 10 i'd start at 15% WOT, you can always drop it if ts too rich

for the 5.6
mode 1 -WOT fuel /
mode 2 -1st gear fuel
mode 3 -1-2 timing
mode 4 -3-4 timing

untouched all settings will show as 128 for base set

id' reset at
mode 1- add 15% = 147
mode 2 -128 ( leaving it there still adds 15% since you adjusted the WOT, you can drop it back if spool is sluggish due to high O2 but i wouldnt drop less than what you added to WOT)
mode 3 - 140
mode 4 -140
i wouldnt play too much with timing unless you have a logger to keep a close eye on the KR through a run , get the o2s inline first , if there's any kr with o2s good drop it down a little and try again as no two cars are the same

wow thanks for all the help guys. im gonna install the turbo on saturday most likely and then test and tune from their i guess. i dont wanna mess with the chip too much as ive never really done it before. i wonder if theres anyone in the chicagoland/northwest subarbs area who would be willing to help me with the tune and maybe show me how to do it for a fee of course. but well see after the install how it runs without any changes to the tune. thanks again for all the help you guys are the chit.
