I keep hearing about setups from Turbomotion or similar setups but I have yet to see any pics of anyone who has done it successfully. Does anyone have any decent pics of a hot air car that has been converted to an intercooled one, be it custom or professional? What about the costs?

My dad and I have done the Spearco hotair conversion. We initially did the conversion on a guys 84 GN that I bought and probably 6 months later wrecked. I have since put the frount mount from the Spearco kit into the stock 86-87 location via some custom brackets that my dad made for me. I think that the mounting method we are currently using is easier to do rather than cut up your core support for clearance around the pipes for the intercooler. Cool 84 has some nice pics of his car with the original spearco setup on his car I'm sure. I have several pictures of my car with the current setup.

I think the Spearco kit from spearco is about $1200 I think. I had it on the car when I got it so I dont know the exact price.

P.S. I have the car in the paint shop currently and I am going to college full-time so I havent been able to determine what the full performance potential of this car is. I have run a 13.40 @98 but there was a fuel problem that is either the O2 sensor or the fuel pump going out. I have replaced the pump but have not got to run the car since.

spearco I/C conversion

Jerry Berger jr----thanks for the better pics,I tried the e-mail you gave me when you were here in ariz, but couldnt get it to work---these pics are awsome, super job you guys are doing to that G.N.,,I think I`ll do the same thing w/mine,but first gotta get it running to get the bugs worked out, then I`ll re-locate the I/C---- see ya,Jack

Great pics and I think it's something I'd like to do. The only problem is that you don't show any close up pics showing the connection into the intake manifold. How has this particular setup been working out for you?

Intake pics

Yeah that is pretty much the only ting not in my pics. There is an elbow made out of aluminum. It replaces the turbo to intake adapter and seals with a o-ring. This elbow is included with the kit. On some turbos you might actually have to grind some on the back of the compressor housing to make sure the elbow and the housing do not rub. We did, but I do't think I would of had to. Driveability with the frount mount where it is was supposed to be out frount gave me some issues. The car would hunt for idle sometimes as well as some noticeable lag having to pressurize 10' of pipe and the intercooler and then it gets to the throttle body. Thats alot of airspace to fill that's not really going into the engine at full boost pressure. With the setup how I have it now. The lag is better and it no longer hunts for idle.

I have only really run the car once with the current intercooler setup. I have since changed turbos and fuel pumps, but the time I did run the car it ran a best of 13.40 @ 98. But I think that is due to the fuel pump going out and the car backing it self off during the run.

Well I'm confused, are those the pics of your current setup?

While I'm at it where/what site can I order the kit from?

Spearco makes the Kit for the Hot-aired regals
i assume you would have to go through them or a vendor of theirs.

Waco84's spearco kit is sorta of a modified version and surely doesnt come like that in the box.
he put alot of time and effort into his intercooler system
but it looks amazing

but i saved some links for future reference, becuase i too plan on the conversion this winter.

check this webshots page, out , i think its 1Quick6's car

this is what it would look like if you just took it out of the box and installed the kit

i dont think it would be too hard of an install if you were to take your time,

happy new year !!!!!!

Thats mine car..........or how my car use to be setup. Spearco is a awesome intercooler. You may need electric fans if you install it in front of the radiator.....I did at least.....was just getting a little to hot for me at times. Try and find a nice used system for sale may save yourself some money. If you look at mine picture I have my V2 install pictures on there..........I need to get more pictures on there. I am having problems with my V2 setup, because I need to get it tuned better, and I am a first time tuner. But, the difference in a bigger downpipe, intake, turbo, injectors..........all that good stuff...........it is like owning a different car. At just 10# of boost(that all i can get right now....leak somewhere) the car plants my A$$ in the seat compared to just pushing me in the seat like before the V2 conversion. And I cant keep the damn car from breaking the tires lose.

A intercooler and a ported intake are definetly the way to go. And a bigger turbo helps too;)

hey wacko84GN and xxninja that is a nice setup and nice pics but one thing i cant see in either of the links is where the piping on the right hand side closest to the driverside goes to ? its the one that goes right behind the intake manifold next to the throttle body where does that pipe hook up too? its got me confused maybe the kit comes wit such a part where u hook up that pipe too? thanx for ur time

Well I'll try to solve your problem.

I took digital pictures of the paperwork sent with the intercooler kit. I'm emailing you a VERY BAD picture of the pipe. It an elbow that pushes down into the intake like the old turbo to intake adapter used to. The elbow is made out of aluminum. It can barely be seen in the picture. It is the thing to the right of the tubo in the picture. You can tell it by the silicone hose on the end of pipe. Yu can also kinda see how close the elbow comes to the housing of the turbo.

hey waco84gn it sounds like your car was running pretty close to what mine was I got a 13.5 @99 mph with the stock turbo street tires and pump gas but I always felt like something held me down on top end maybe the fuel pump but I really felt like it was very capable of running so 12's in race trim

And FWIW, I'm thinking of picking up the kit myself and using it with a ported intake, that should produce the biggest gains with the Spearco kit. The intercooler itself is very nice and hugely efficient, you can make great power with it regardless of whether you do a front-mount with it or do like Waco84GN did which may be better overall for a mostly street-driven car. I'm thinking with more boost, good gas, and this kit and a ported intake, I should be in the low 12's no problem.

Added the spearco to mine and took a full second off of my times.
Got a 12.94. I think I could hit mid to low 12's. Left with little to no boost and had an uppipe that started leaking. Hadn't got a good tune either. I haven't done any head or intake work. Motor is 93k stock. Just a new timing chain and valve springs.

hey guys need some opinions here i saw conleyracing.com website and i seen thst they have a 3 inch terry houston dp wit an external wastegate flange now my question is which is a better dp to go wit the trry houston 3 inch dp w/ external wastegate or the mease performance one that removes the elbow ? i need some serious feedback and opinions thanx for ur time guys

Terry Houston downpipes (THDP's) won't work with our cars, they're designed for the '86-'87-style only. Mease is the way to go, it's a nice looking piece.

its all sounds fine and dandy
but , what i wanna know is........

i keep hearing about idle issues and driveability and lag issues
due to the extra plumbing installed, between the turbo and the intake........

how bad are these issues?
Is the car gunna fall on its face when i mash the pedal? is it gonna studder or stall , on take off? Is it gunna idle like crap?

i hear most people fix this with relocating the throttle but the
last thing i wanna do it relocate the TB, because then it will look like a hackjob,
im looking a for a nice neat install,

anyone who has used these kits, care to chime in?
and let us know your experiences.......
lthat would answer alot of my questions........

thanx fellas
