i tried to find a trash can like the mods i've seen on here but i didn't find one close to my specs so i decided to try my luck at prefab-ing one outta a fiberglass kit ( all in one ). i have done some fiberglass work before so this isn't my 1st rodeo and i'm sure it won't be as nice as new ones. but for 20.00 and i still have the frame to my intercoolerscoop i thought i would try it. well it's drying in the back yard now and it seems to be doing ok so pray for me and my fabrication work on it. i know it's not hard work but the scoop had a hole all the way though it and only had the frame (outer parts of it ) so i'm trying it and seeing if i can make this work. all the trash cans i found didnt match up to the one i have on there. it won't be perfect but it'll do the job. now my only other concern is i'm missing the screen to keep rocks from tearing up my intercooler. any ideas on that before i put it back on?

Kudos to you for doing your own project like this...it's really gratifying, isn't it? It makes you feel proud you did it yourself. It'll come out alright.
As for your screen problem, try my idea...us the metal gutter guards made for gutters, keeps out leaves, sticks, branches out of your gutter, can be bought at Home Depot for about 7-8 dollars for 5 three foot sections. I have used these screens in all kinds of car projects....i.e. I fabricated a small screen for the turbo intake of my KenneBell ram air dam. Worked just great. I made a debre screen for the inside of my L-88 hood air box on my '69 Corvette. These screens can be soldered, brazed, and bent into almost any shape. For the KenneBell scoop project, I traces a line on a piece of 2x4 wood block from the back side, cut out the insert of it, then bent the screen over it, subtracting two times the thickness of the screen so it would fit in the air dam scoop. I painted it red to exaggerate it's appearance, but it sure works great in keeping out road debre. (i.e, stones, leaves, small children, road kill, big bugs, nuts and bolts from cars that try to outrun me and fail bigtime.) This screen would be ideal, in my opinon, for your problem. A great screenguard for you intercooler scoop. Go to Home Depot and ask the salesman for some metal "GutterGuard". He'll hook you up with some. Unlimited uses for it if you think about it. Worked for me. Good luck with your fiberglass scoop. Bet it'll look and work great. Share some pictures of it if you can. Would love to see it. Merry Christmas to you.;)

will do

it;s not perfect but will work better then no air coming into the intercooler. it's hard to get the right shape since it's missing the middle part but i wanted to fix it and it was an eye sore for me. here's a pic of it before i painted it.

it aint pretty but

after sanding it down alittle and some paint it;ll look ok, tell me guys what do you think? no be nice it's been 20 yrs since i worked with fiberglass so take it easy and let me know after paint i think it should look ok

I fabed a new shroud for my V4 SLIC out of aluminium. Had it heliarced up and powder coated. Looks better than the original one. I also made mine have a boost activated trap door bottom. So, once you hit five lbs of boost, the bottom drops down another 2 1/2" for a very big opening. When you let off the gas, it pulls back up for speed bump clearance. I can post pics if needed. I've been meaning to post this in the fab section.

Happy spooling.

Tell ya what!

Yeh, Fool show us the actuator set up....

Rather than hijacking this thread, I'll post it in the fab section. Give me about an hour to do the wright up, and I'll post a link.;)

I've been meaning to do this for a few years.

I would have used the weaved fiberglass although the mat is good for adding strength. Another option (which I guess is too late at this point in time) is to use cardboard as a "frame", then lay the glass over it. Also make sure you used the right amount of hardener in the resin. I've mixed mine both ways and someimes it cures too fast and warps the product and other times it takes way too long to cure and it still was tacky .

And I want to see fool's setup

wasn't even thinking of cutting out some boxes

to make it straight, the job looks crappy from what i can see but i bought the bigger kit so i have some room for trial and error. i'll post pics once i get it right, i don't like the finished product as it sits but a saw and some time and it'll be alot straighter. but i like the other guys setup talk about way cool. wonder what something like that would costs to fab up. i'm sure i'm not the only guy to get a smile and then some when they saw it.

not it's not too late

i can always cut out the fiberglass and start over with cardboard, i know it'll be a learning process as i said before because it's been over 20 yrs since i've messed with fiberglass but i've got plenty of time and i'd like to get it looking good before i put it back in.

Trashcans still rule!:D

i agree with the trashcan mod

but i couldn't find one close to what i needed size wise. the one that had all that cool stuff looks cool. but i would want it on there right and no southern engineering even though it's not stock but still looking good and like they belong.

dimensions on trashcan mods

what trashcans are you guys using, i went to several office stores and checked a few other places but all the trashcans i found were about 9 inches at the bottom which if i remember correctly our intercooler scoop is about 12-14 roughly. just wanted to know if there was something i missed, or maybe my measuring device is off. i tried to find the right size but since the ones i was looking at were too small but i still would like to know where. heck i even asked the office supply stores and a few let me check their online store and i couldn't find anything that was closer in size. i'd prefer to get that done then to cut out the fiberglass i did and redo it to make it straighter.

I stole our Rubbermaid out of the kitchen one day.:D Wife said she got it at the Dollar Store. It is not a perfect fit. The trashcan slids into the factory Precision IC scoop. I used black duct tape to seal the edges to trap the air. The sides do fit against the factory GM air dam. I used self tapping screws to hold it in place and a few self tapping screws to secure the end to the Presicion scoop in the back. You cannot see this unless you are under the car. It might not be perfect but from what any observer can see it looks good.

Yeah...it still a trashcan...but sometimes you just have to fabricate a few things. Im in south Louisiana..we call it Cajun Engineering.:)

i'm gonna have to check out that dollar store one, best price for something your gonna cut up anyway. may have to check a few as most get their stock from several distributors.

since i bought a big fiberglass kit

i thought i would put a few layers of that fiberglass on it for added strength. i'll work on it here and there and paint it and hope for the best. got alot of sanding and cutting to do, got a dremel with all the attachments so it'll be put to use tomorrow when the stuff dries. wife woke up and was like what are you doing. i did most of the work outside but brought it in and put some newspaper down and she smelled it and came outta the bedroom and was like that smell is all over the house. didnt think it would cover the whole house that quick as it was only in the house a few mins while i made sure the ends that i touched up held. guess she's got a good nose i could smell it but i was taking it into the garage to store it tonight and will be puttting it outside in the am to let it dry better. hope for better results and i did use parts of a cut out box to get the ends alittle straighter and stuff. hope it comes out better, as i wasn't too pleased with the work i did the other day but thought i could cut it out. i know maybe some of you guys may harp on me for having it in the house but it was only a for a few mins. i'll post some pics later as it's looking better so far. of course the finished product should come out and look alot better then it broken up and the backside i put the fiberglass on was missing. thanks for all the input guys your help is always appreciated.
